I compiled a list of what I consider to be songs that give you that feel-good, high-on-life feeling. I could be in the worst mood and angry at the world, choose one of these songs to jam out to, and it turns my day around. I admittedly have a playlist called “soothing” for this exact purpose. These songs differ in the feelings they give me and the purpose they serve, so I have listed ones that can be used for different situations. They all give a beautiful meaning that is sometimes overlooked.
1. "Bruises" – Train feat. Ashley Monroe
“You’re not alone in how you’ve been. Everybody loses, we all got bruises.”
This upbeat song gives a glimpse of two old friends meeting up again and realizing that everyone has weaknesses and mistakes of their own.
For anyone having an off day or feeling bad about themselves, this song reminds you that we all have those days and mistakes of our own, that is what makes us human and brings us together, and even makes for good conversation!
2. "I Lived" – OneRepublic
“I owned every second that this world could give… with every broken bone, I swear I lived.”
This is my personal favorite. I had an extremely hard time finding the best quote from this song because all of the words are poetic and beautiful. I highly suggest taking the time to look them up and read them all. This song tells you to take advantage of every experience and to not be afraid to take chances.
For anyone feeling nostalgic and eager to look back on life’s experiences.
3. "Man in the Mirror" – Michael Jackson
“If you wanna make the world a better place… take a look at yourself, and make a change.”
Everybody loves MJ and his music, but not everyone takes the time to think about the meanings of his songs. He suggests that for people who want to make a difference in the world or with themselves, to look at themselves and then make that change.
For anyone inspired to make a difference in the world or looking for social change.
4. "Try" – Colbie Caillat
“Why, should you care, what they think of you. When you’re all alone, by yourself, do you like you?”
Colbie Caillat is an inspiration for young women everywhere. This song reminds adolescents and young adults stressing about their self-image and being liked that the most important thing for all of us is to be true to yourself and love yourself.
For anyone struggling with self-confidence.
5. "Jesus Take the Wheel" – Carrie Underwood
“Cause I can’t do this on my own. I’m letting go…Jesus take the wheel.”
Although this song tells a specific story of a lady in distress in an imminent tragedy, it also stands to represent a deeper message. To me, it symbolizes that whenever you are struggling in life and losing control of yourself, ask for help in your faith. Ask God to step in and take over.
For anyone feeling out of control and needing faith in your life.
6. "Follow Your Arrow" – Kacey Musgraves
“Make lots of noise, kiss lots of boys, or kiss lots of girls if that’s something you’re into”
This song comically describes life’s contradictions. Everyone expects something from you but you can’t please everyone so just do you.
For someone feeling lost, feeling that you have to please everyone, or feeling the necessity to be perfect.
7. "Unwritten" – Natasha Bedingfield
“I’m just beginning, the pen’s in my hand, ending unplanned”
Life is in your hands and it is what you make of it. You have the power to lead yourself down the path that you want to go down - anything is possible.
For anyone excited for the future and what life has in store for you.
8. "Don’t Worry Be Happy" – Bobby McFerrin
“In every life we have some trouble. But when you worry, you make it double”
Bobby McFerrin in this catchy tune reminds everyone simply to be happy! Why worry so much when life can be so great.
For anyone stressed out or preoccupied with worries.
