1. At least one of your things is missing at all times. Whether it's your shoes, a backpack, money, your phone or keys (I swear those things just walk away); you always manage to be looking for something. You remember the last place you had them... and then poof! They seem to have magically disappeared into the abyss that is your life. Most times turning up a few months later in strange places.
2. More often than not your phone is shattered. Twice in two weeks is currently my record. You shatter your phone so often, replacing it seems like a waste. Your fingertips are used to the tiny shards of glass at this point anyways. You'd rather just keep the old one because at least then you will feel less guilty when you drop it again... plus, who has $200 to shell out every month when you break another phone.
3. You never get asked to hold onto other people's things... and if you do, you lose them. You would lose your head if it wasn't attached so it's better to not add more into the mix. In fact, most people end up holding your things when you go out anyways.
4. People feel comfortable around you. Although being the mess has its downfalls... When you are the mess of the friend group it's hard to be judgmental of other people's lives. This means that people feel comfortable messing up around you because they know you'll understand.
5. Getting new expensive things scares you because that just means it's worse if... when you break it. If things have some wear-and-tear it's a bit less upsetting when something happens to it. You feel more at ease knowing it's okay if you break something. Having a new, expensive item has some added pressure not to mess up.
6. You fall... a lot. I'm not sure WHY this happens... but when you're a mess it seems like gravity just likes to bring you a little closer to the ground more often than other people. You're constantly covered in bruises and scratches from all of the weird situations you've gotten yourself into.
7. When something goes wrong it barely phases you anymore. Let's face it, when you're a mess all the time things are bound to take unexpected turns. For normal people, this may be unsettling or irritating, but when you're a mess, those unexpected turns become expected. Just another day in the life. You've learned the only way to survive it is to keep laughing and move on.
To my fellow messes, I feel you. Embrace the chaos that is your life. Let's hope growing older will turn our messes into slightly higher-functioning ones.
