You don't have to like it, but I do. Here are 8 things you should stop saying to girls with tattoos.
1. "Don't you think these make you look less feminine?"
No. I think my tattoos add personality. If you think it makes me look less feminine, well then, you're entitled to your opinion. But if I felt that getting a tattoo made me feel less of anything, I absolutely wouldn't have gotten it in the first place.
2. "Are you afraid of how it'll look in your wedding dress?"
Right now, no. I don't plan on getting married anytime soon and I think it'll show my guests my personality. However, if for some reason I do want to cover it when that day comes, there are very easy ways to cover it up with either the dress itself or makeup designed specifically to cover tattoos that doesn't involve painful removal.
3. "I would've never expected you, of all people, to get one."
And I would've never expected you to care so much about what I do.
4. "Are you afraid you'll regret it?"
Why bring up something that is not an issue now? Sure, there is a possibility that sometime in the far-off future that I or someone else could regret a tattoo they got. However, we are well aware of this when we get the tattoo and we still made the decision to get it. We've made the decision to cross that bridge when we get to it.
5. "What does it mean?"
Why does every tattoo have to have a meaning behind it? Some people love just expressing their personality through tattoos. While it's nice to ask the story behind a tattoo, some follow up questions people ask can be hurtful and even offensive to someone.
Like...
6. "Why would you get something permanent on your body that doesn't mean anything?"
It's my body and my tattoo. I have the decision to put whatever on it I see fit. Just because my tattoo doesn't have some big elaborate backstory like others, it doesn't mean it doesn't have meaning to me personally. Asking why someone would get something with no meaning can be hurtful because sometimes it implies the tattoo is stupid and a waste. But, it's not your tattoo now is it?
7. "Girls with tattoos aren't my type."
That's fine. If you don't like tattoos there are plenty of girls out there without them. You can have your type and your opinion, but don't make me feel like I am less worthy because of a little tattoo.
8. "Why? You're so pretty!"
Thank you... For saying I'm pretty. But now are you saying that I'm less pretty because I have a tattoo? I'm confused. Does my tattoo affect both my inner and outer beauty? I truly don't believe that getting a tattoo can many anyone less pretty. If anything, it makes them more beautiful for expressing their individuality and personality.
