8 Things that Happen When You Are a Golden Retriever On The Inside

Many people throughout my life have commented that I act like a dog, in that I am very excitable, I run around a lot, and I am pretty loyal. However, I took the time to look at myself through other peoples’ eyes, and I noticed some pretty striking things. So I managed to find it within myself to sit still for an hour and write them down. Here is what I found:

You go ham for anything peanut butter.

This includes, but is not limited to, peanut butter sandwiches, peanut butter flavored protein bars, peanut butter itself, really anything as long as its peanut butter. Peanut butter is really amazing and the more people accept this the better the world will be.

Tennis balls actually excite you.

I like doing sprint training with tennis balls, so I literally play fetch. Not only that, but they're also great to just bounce around for fun, which leads me into my next topic.

You find enjoyment in the littlest of things.

I have absolutely no trouble finding things to be excited about. I think the world can be a pretty nasty place, so I find the bright side, enjoyment, or positive note in anything. And, yes, part of that is being very easily entertained. Believe me, it does not take much. For example, the tennis balls, mud puddles, etc. You ever see a dog when a treat is presented to him/her? All of their attention is focused on that one object? Yeah, that’s how I am whenever people food is presented in front of me. In short, I have no chill, especially around food.

That's me at a buffet with no line.

When something really excites you, you aren’t entirely sure how to handle it.

Scratches are like crack to you.

Take it from my significant other, whenever someone, especially her, scratches my neck, it's legit the greatest feeling in the world. Behind the neck, on my back, and yes, even belly rubs just feel great. (Behind the ears is the best for anyone who’s interested in trying this.) It may sound like I’m just making this up, but I swear it feels amazing. Relieves a lot of stress.

You can get very specific vibes from people.

There are certain people I have met in my life whom I just don’t get good feelings from. I honestly cant explain it, but I will say this: I tend to trust my two German Shepherds when they don’t like somebody.

You are extremely protective.

When I studied abroad in Italy, I was one of the few who had been to another country before, so my professor literally started calling me her Sheepdog. I am not even remotely exaggerating when I say, when the rest of the class was walking home drunk from the bar, I was literally herding them down the streets because I was the only one who knew where they were going. Like legit, herding them -- like walking in circles, so they stayed out of the street and didn’t stray too far from the group.

You make friends with every dog you meet on the street.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
