The customer is always right. Service with a smile. Can I help you with anything else? If you’ve heard or have been forced to spout any of these phrases, then you may have had the pleasure of working in the wonderful field known simply as "customer service." Most people have done it by now, and contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t seem to get easier over time. The great experiences make the job totally worth it, while the bad ones will force you to question your entire existence. Here’s a list of things every server, cashier and anyone who has ever worked with the general public has ever had to deal with.
1. Rude Customers
We’ve all had that one customer who’s having a bad day and somehow decides to take it out on you. It’s more likely to occur when you just so happen to be in a good mood.
2. Being Asked Stupid Questions
“I’m sorry ma'am, but I do not know whether or not the food we serve contains any sort of partially hydrogenated oil. Would you like me to go ask the cooks?”
3. When Customers Ask to Speak to a Manager
My. Manager. Will. Tell. You. The. Same. Thing. That. I. Just. Told. You.
4. When Your Boss is a Direct Relative of Satan
A boss can either be your best friend during that 9 – 5 shift, or the very bane of your existence. The person that makes work fly by, or the very reason it seems to last forever.
5. Working with Coworkers You Hate
(See #4.)
6. Getting Called In Early/Being Asked to Stay Late
No. Just no. I get there when the schedule says so, and I leave when the schedule says so.
7. Faking a Smile Can Get Annoying
Do you know how much effort we put into staying positive? How hard it is to look happy? The difficulty involved in faking that smile sometimes?! It’s really hard. Just trust me on this one.
8. EVERYTHING.
Sometimes it can just be too much. Eventually, a day will come when you become annoyed simply by walking into your place of business. And that is the day when you realize that customer service is no longer for you.
