As I get older, I am realizing that having an older brother is truly a blessing and there have been many lessons learned from him. The bond between a sister and a brother is so special in a family. I may claim that he was adopted, but here are a few things he has taught me thus far.
1. He will always have your back.. No matter what.
Whether it's saving you from getting in trouble with your parents, a boy who broke your heart, or girls who are being typical high school girls, your older brother will always have your back and do what he needs to do.
2. Boys' clothes are more comfortable than girls' clothes.
There is just something about over sized sweatpants and over sized t-shirts. To this day, I still have some of my brother's clothes even though he has moved out of the house.
3. Live your life to the fullest.
Whether you’re at school or out on a Friday night, you can make anything fun and should make it fun so that no time goes wasted.
4. Brothers only pick on their sisters so much because they love them.
There have been many days where I just cannot handle my brother. He has made me cry more than once because he was being "mean" to me. As I got older, I realized that it was all in fun and he wasn't actually being mean to me. He was just picking on me to push my buttons and after all, that's what brothers are for, right?
5. Friends come and go, but family is forever.
I learned that no matter how many friend breakups I have, I will always have my family by my side. My brother made that well known, too. And to be honest, I would much rather go over to my brother and sister-in-law's house with my mom and just hang out for the night than go to a party with my friends.
6. Follow your dreams.
Brothers truly do want to see you go far in life and do what you love. He taught me to shoot for the stars and follow my dreams; you can do anything you set your mind to.
7. It is okay to get dirty and do things that aren't "girly."
Some days are meant for curling your hair and wearing a dress, but some days are meant for playing in the dirt and wearing old raggedy clothes.
8. If you have a brother, you will always have a friend.
From day one, you will always have someone to play with, someone to ride the bus with, someone to tell your secrets to, someone to look up to, someone to learn from (even if you're learning from their mistakes) and someone who loves you.
