8 Things I've Done For The First Time Since Starting College
JoAnne Houck

College itself is a huge new beginning. Something you've never experienced before and a huge first in your life. Six weeks into this new adventure, I have realized that I have done a lot of things that I have never done in my life before. Here are 8 things I have done for the very first time since starting college.

1. Lived in and decorated a dorm. Oh little freshman dorms. I had such a field day before college began running around to different stores picking out the perfect bedding and wall decorations. Not only do I live in a dorm for the first time ever, but I also share this little space with a roommate which is also a brand new experience. So far college dorms are my favorite thing...Minus the community bathroom showers.

2. Did laundry

Yes, believe it or not but I have never done laundry before coming to college. Which was more common than I would have thought it to be. I came in knowing the basics of separating darks and whites and throwing in a lifesaving tide pod. Surprise mom I wasn't the least prepared! I will admit that the first time I did laundry I sent pictures to my mom just to verify that I wasn't about to ruin everything I own. However I do feel that now I am pretty much a laundry pro.

3. Argued over language so many times

THIS IS A BUBBLER. Apparently if you're not from Wisconsin you have never heard someone call this a bubbler. "Water fountain" or "drinking fountain" sound completely wrong to a Wisconsinite and my first time I heard a bubbler being called those I had no clue what they talking about. I have had many confused looks when I mention a bubbler and I now know that its only a Wisconsin slang.

4. Made Tie- Blankets

Once upon a time we went to a JoAnn-Fabrics store and they had blanket kits on sale for $10. So we bought tons. 12 to be exact. We started making them when there's nothing else to do in the dorms and they are so much fun! Being a first time blanket maker and very accident prone I bought the kids version with guide lines on wear to cut. My first non child proof blanket I completely messed up but its okay, a friend with sewing skills saved the day and the blanket and it turned out semi beautiful. Tie-Blankets are now my go to craft.

5. Joined a sorority

I did a little thing called sorority recruitment for the first time and ended up finding my home (or my turtle shell) in Delta Zeta. I am now a baby turtle and so far Im loving it! Being in a sorority is super exiting and so much fun. I can't wait to make new memories and have many more firsts with all my new sisters.

6. Glow in the dark mini golf

There has been so much fun stuff to do around campus and this was one of my favorites. In black lights we hit little glowing golf balls around plastic homemade tracks into the holes. Also going with a great great group of friends made it so much fun.

7. Mud volleyball

First time playing volleyball, and the first time playing volleyball in mud. Even though my team lasted a whole three minutes before we lost we still had tons of fun. Founder's Flounders team floundered in the mud but had some rocking t-shirts while we did it. My first time playing mud volleyball will definetely not be my last! Hopefully next year we can "just keep swimming" a little longer that 3 minutes.

8. THE AMAZING RACE

This is BY FAR my number one favorite thing I have done on campus so far! Little fact about me is that I am pretty much obsessed with The Amazing Race and when we found out our campus is hosting their very own we decided to sign our team up. All week long I was bouncing off the walls excited for the race and lived by the theme song. We wanted to win but knew it probably wasn't going to happen seeing as we were all just freshman in it for the very first time. We raced with tons of excitement and somehow we ended up as the champions of The Amazing Race and I don't think I've ever been more proud of anything! This was the best first thing of college so far.

Six weeks into our college experience and I have had more great experiences than I can count. I know there are many more firsts to come and I'm more than excited to see what's in store!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
