Our freshman year going into college is probably one of the biggest transitions we have to make in our life. For most of us, it's a time we leave home and are dropped into a completely new and unfamiliar place where we're expected to know how the world works and how to properly function in it. Unfortunately, that is not the case. In fact, your first year in college will consist of a lot of trial and error (mostly error), self doubt and a whole lot of calling mom to ask for help, (in some cases, that asking for help, is replaced with begging to come home). So, in an attempt to ease the minds of the new graduates of high school, here are the top facts you absolutely need to know before diving bank account first into the newest chapter in your life: college.
1. High school was easy.
In comparison to college, of course. But let's face it; graduating high school will be the easiest thing one will ever accomplish in life. You better know now that college will be far more challenging and far more eye opening.
2. You will be broke.
You can save as much money as you want, but at the end of the day, you will be another broke college kid paying nonstop for an education. On top of education, food will certainly be the taker of most money. Save, save, save as much as you can. This goes for food, especially. Leftovers will become your life and soul all four years of college.
3. 8 AM classes are not a good idea.
You will sleep through your alarms. You will not go to class. You will not learn anything. And you will fail. DO NOT GET AN 8 AM CLASS YOUR FRESHMAN YEAR. Going into freshman year, you are bound to lack the self motivation to get out of bed.
4. Mom knows best.
If ever in doubt, call mom. Even though she won't let you quit school and come home, she knows what needs to be done in order for you to be your most successful self.
5. You will write lengthy-sometimes-last-minute papers.
Papers on papers on papers. You will be writing papers ABOUT papers. You will save yourself a lot of stress if you know how to properly form an analytical or research essay and be able to do so quickly! Be sure you know this going in. (Again, it's not high school!)
6. You will procrastinate.
It is an inevitability for all incoming freshmen. You will procrastinate and you will say to yourself that you need to get your shit together and start time managing, but a week later you will do the same exact thing. (My five hour binge studying and my four papers completed the night before will vouch for that.)
7. You will party. A lot.
Sometimes against your will... but then again, what's a freshman year without it?
8. The friends you make will become lifelong friends.
You will soon realize how blessed you truly are to be surrounded by your newly found college BFFS for life. They are going through everything you are, suffering through the same terrors. Through your experiences shared, it will be virtually impossible not to stick out the rest of your lives together.
Yes, freshman year can present a lot tribulations, but it also constitutes as one of the best times of you life. Good luck to all you incomers! Savor every moment.
