English majors are unique in that they decided to choose a major that they love, instead of settling for a miserable major in hopes of getting a better job when they graduate. The great thing about English majors is that they have the confidence to know that no matter where they go in life, they can succeed. Their love for books, writing, argument and learning will prepare them for any field of work, and really any obstacle in life too.
If you're an English major, here are eight things you can definitely relate to. And if you're not an English major, please take these into consideration the next time you call your English major friend a nerd.
1. There is no such thing as "over-thinking."
You are constantly analyzing the reasons and meanings behind everything, because as English majors we know everything has a deeper meaning. We dig and dig at the surface of everything until we come to this deeper meaning. Your loved ones often ridicule you for over-thinking things, but they end up being proved wrong because over-thinking often leads to conclusions and assumptions that are often correct. Don't they know we major in over-thinking? With a concentration in over-analyzing.
2. The excitement you feel when you find a fellow book lover.
It's hard to find someone to to talk about your love for books with. So when you finally find someone who likes books you excitedly realize they are your soulmate and you immediately start discussing every book you've ever loved.
3. When you try to explain to your friends why you love books.
4. When a non-book lover asks why you don't just use a Kindle.
5. You have a love-hate relationship with writing.
Writing has always been your biggest passion, your outlet, your solace. However, after writing a 12-page paper on the rhetoric of the 14th century, you think you will never write again. Don't worry, this feeling fades within hours.
6. The struggle of writers block and procrastination.
7. Having to answer people that ask, "What can you even do with an English degree?"
Hm, I don't know. What ever will I do with my limitless knowledge of various cultures throughout history or my remarkable skills in writing, reading, arguing and communicating?
8. You can't stand when people say they don't read.
What do you mean you don't read? Like that's some sort of option? Do you just never do the readings for your classes? That sounds like you would be better off lighting your college tuition on fire. Menus, bills, emails, text messages, newspapers, Twitter feed. Unless you have some special brail phone, my guess is you're reading all of the time.
