8 Things Everyone at SUNY Cortland Experiences
SUNY Cortland

The 607 has become my home away from home just like it has for most people. However, SUNY Cortland has given me some experiences I wouldn't be able to have anywhere else, and if you haven't experienced any of these, you are missing out.

1. Going out during the week

Each night is a new deal or something to do. Want 25 cent tacos? Then you'll sure be at Dark Horse on Monday. Don't have a lot of money to go out? Then Twofers at Stone on Wednesday or Dollar Drafts at great on Thursday's is your time to shine (Don't forget about mixers!!) Feel like going out a little early on a Friday? Then Happy Hour at Stone is the right place for you.

Pro Tip: Set your alarms for the next day BEFORE you go out to avoid sleeping through class. And don't fall down the stairs at Dark Horse (even though it's almost impossible not to.)!

2. Neubig and Bistro

It's impossible to have never experienced these two dining halls at C-State. Lets face it the food isn't that great, but you really haven't experienced Cortland without them. Can't forget the hand scanners that never actually work! Bistro cookies are your enemy but always your best friend, and you wouldn't have it any other way.

Pro Tip: On popular days like chicken parm or wing day, avoid going during peak dinner times and go a little early.

3. Coffee Mania

Before Cortland, my heart was pledged to Starbucks, so my heart was broken when the closest one was 45 minutes away (in Ithaca of course). But a new love has come into my life known as Coffee Mania.

Pro tip: Get their Snickers iced coffee. It's absolutely amazing, and you will not regret it. And if you can't get a ride there I heard a rumor that Long Island Bagel sells Coffee Mania...

4. Cortaca

With a winning 6 game winning streak, Cortland has been dominating over Ithaca in every way, even though they have Chipotle. We can just go to Syracuse instead anyway. It is by far one of the most exciting and coolest games and is known as the biggest, little game in college football.

Pro tip: Get tickets to the game even if you don't want to go. Chances are you'll be sucked into going last minute or someone else want to buy last minute tickets.

5. Dragon Dollars

6. The weather

Cortland weather is kind of unpredictable. One day there will be a blizzard and the next it could be 60 degrees. Cortland was the first time I ever experienced below zero weather and I never want to feel that cold again.

Pro tip: Bring a long warm jacket, really good boots, and an umbrella; trust me you’ll need them. Don’t forget to waddle like a penguin!

7. The Hill

If you don’t plan on ever going to the gym the hill will keep you in tip top shape. Most people like myself after the first month just cut through the buildings making getting to class less sweaty and not out of breath.

Pro tip: The fastest way to get downtown in my opinion is up the hill. Either attempt the walk up or wait for the bus. At night you can usually ask the drivers to drop you off by Clayton or Prospect making the walk much faster.

8. You wouldn't have it any other way

Cortland will give you the best memories, experiences, and I couldn't call anywhere else my home.

Pro tip: Don't take any of it for granted and take advantage of all of these awesome experiences.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
