Going to a university that is heavily science-based, I am constantly surrounded by discussions of science. And lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about the struggles of being a science major. While I’m sure it’s extremely difficult to be in the sciences (most of my friends are), I wanted to give a shoutout to all my non-science homies out there. Because we also feel that struggle bus. So without further ado, here are the top eight struggles non-science majors’ face, so you can know what we deal with.
Having everyone tell you, “you never even have to study!”
Wrong. That is just so wrong. While we may not be studying the same things as science majors, we work and study hard, too. Instead, we’re studying about politics, journalism, or social issues, and constantly writing papers or articles, and taking tests that require lots of nonconventional thinking, which is also important. So think before you say that we don’t study.Hearing everyone talk about how much easier it is to write papers than to take tests.
Fine, you can write my 10-page papers about rhetorical criticism that I have assigned every week. I guarantee you’ll regret that, because it’s not as easy as you would think.
The typical, “what are you going to do with that degree?” question.
What am I going to do with this degree? That’s a really good question, because the possibilities are literally endless. Contrary to popular belief, there are thousands of other job opportunities than just being working in a science-related field.
When everyone complains about how you never do any “real” homework.
Maybe it’s because there’s less of us than there are science majors at some schools, but we definitely do our fair share of homework. Just because something’s a different subject matter than something else doesn’t mean it doesn’t involve lots of work.
When extended family or other older adults lose interest as soon as you tell them your major.
“Are you sure you really want to do that? You’d be a great (insert any other position here!)” Eye roll.
“Don’t you want a real career?”
No, I’m only in this field of study so I can become a stripper. That’s obviously all it’s good for.
“You’re never going to make any money or be successful.”
Tell that to Bill Gates or Barack Obama.
And finally, the feelings of having others think they’re smarter and you don't actually have struggles because they science and you don’t.
Everybody here is smart and talented in their own ways, and we’re all working hard to achieve a goal. Don’t undermine someone’s abilities just because they might be different than yours. Please.
