The winter season is hard for everyone, especially Floridians. We Florida folk live in the heat all year round and once we step foot in the cold, our bodies basically shut down. Here are eight signs that let everyone know you are a Floridian in the wintertime.
1. You are the only one that is excited about the first snow.
Snow is magical white fairy dust to us, but to Northerners, snow is just a menace that will to turn into gray ice. At the first sight of snow, we Floridians start dreaming of sledding, building snowmen, and making snow angels. It's just one big winter wonderland!
2. You had to Google where to buy the best winter coat so you can stay warm all season long.
Since all we wear in Florida is shorts and dresses, buying winter coats is a whole new ball game. What's the difference between a parka and a puffer? How many feathers per inch do I need to keep cozy? This is what Google is for.
3. It takes you half an hour to put on all of your layers for the day so you can be prepared for any Arctic-like weather that comes your way.
The snow coat isn't the only winter essential to be nice and toasty. We Floridians require, at a minimum, three sweaters, one hoodie, two pairs of gloves, fuzzy socks on top of ski socks, and leggings under our jeans which are then under our snow pants.
4. You give people weird looks when they are still wearing T-shirts and shorts because it is 50 degrees outside -- and that is cold to us.
In Florida, the temperature rarely drops below fifty degrees so therefore, our winter is basically the North's fall. Ugg season starts when it is 60 degrees and no one is seen without a sweater when it is 70 degrees. When we see someone wearing a T-shirt and shorts when it is nearly freezing outside, our motherly instincts make us want to run and give them our sweater. Any temperature under 60 degrees is freezing everyone!
5. You wonder what the magical blue glitter is that's on the ground every morning.
On some days the glitter is blue and other days it's pink! Who knows what it is but when I bent down to eat some of the snow it made it taste a little salty...
6. You pray for a snow day so you can brag to your friends back in Florida that you got a day off caused by snow, not a hurricane.
Hurricane days off of school suck because we are trapped indoors all day without electricity and air conditioning. But on snow days, we get to make snowmen, sled, and take some super artsy pictures for Instagram.
7. Your nose feels like it is going to fall off and your eyeballs feel like they are going to freeze while your fingers and toes are going numb.
When everyone warned us how cold the winter was actually going to be, we didn't listen. We only thought of drinking hot chocolate and wearing pretty scarves, not frostbite.
8. You miss your warm, warm home back in the Sunshine State.
While we walk through the blizzard, wearing 15 layers and freezing our butts off, we can only think of our warm Florida homes. Nothing compares to the beach, the sunshine, and wearing flip flops!
