An “old soul” is defined by popular Internet definition outlet Urban Dictionary as “a spiritual person who is wise beyond their years.” These people are typically younger, but tend to have the lifestyle and goals of one who is older in age. While they’re stuck in the society they’re brought up in, they aspire to be like Audrey Hepburn in their everyday life. These old souls exist, but how do you know when you’re dating one?
1. They’re there for you when you need them the most.
It’s as if an old soul believes they must abide by wedding vows at all costs, even before marriage. “In sickness and in health” they will be there for you. So, don’t try to take advantage of their caring.
2. They have broad plans for the future, even if they’re just at the first step.
Old souls plan their lives down to their funeral. While they’re aware of their own surroundings and are open to change, they do not want their overall plan to be altered. Be aware, however, that they take everything slow. A fast-paced lifestyle seems mindless and unorthodox to old souls, so even if their eccentric plans make you feel as though they want a fast paced relationship, they don’t.
3. Their instincts and “gut feelings” can often get the best of them.
If your significant other has a “gut feeling” about an event, idea, etcetera, just go along with it. They won’t argue their point because it’s against their nature, but they find comfort in knowing that you trust their judgment, even if you just wanted them to go to an innocent dinner party with you. Other dinner events will come along that will not give them butterflies, I promise.
4. They don’t want expensive gifts, they cherish the little things.
Instead of buying a dozen roses, pick a small bundle of wildflowers. Instead of investing in a gold necklace, write them a poem. Instead of buying a fancy dinner, light some candles and eat pasta in the comfort of home. Instead of going to a movie, set up supplies for painting, sketching, drawing and writing, and look up at their smiling face when they’re quietly putting their brush to the canvas and getting their brain active. There isn’t a better feeling in the world than pleasing your significant other, just be aware of how to do produce that smile.
5. They are less likely to cheat.
While old souls cannot be singled out to be angels, they simply won’t have the urge to cheat in a relationship. Because of their old-fashioned way of thinking, they tend to be very faithful. Also, keeping a secret from someone is impossible for an old soul. They can hide their feelings extremely well. But, if the gossip involves someone else, they’re bound to spill the beans to them.
6. They flourish in solitude.
Silence is key to an old soul’s survival. Once put in social situations for too long, they begin to become overwhelmed. As their partner, you have three tasks: challenge them by pulling them out of their comfort zones, take them dancing or to a show with a group of friends and spend time with them in solitude. Let them know they’re not alone and show them you’re willing to sit quietly and enjoy a good book sometimes. Finally, let them have their alone time, like I mentioned before. You fell in love with them because of who they became through their time of solitude, so let it happen.
7. They connect with you on a very personal, profound level.
An old soul won’t date just anyone. Old souls are only comfortable enough to date if they connected with you on a level that is as vast as the ocean. You obviously feel it too, because I can’t imagine that you couldn’t.
8. They will love you unconditionally.
Old souls accept flaws, but never resist discussing problems that affect both sides. Relationships have their ups and downs, their give and takes, but both partners should feel comfortable and equal. They hope to inspire you, motivate you and light a fire in you that you cannot put out, but they fell for who you originally were and that will never change.
