8 Reasons Why Summer Classes Don't Completely Suck

Goodbye summer and hello class.

I was fortunate enough to never have summer courses up until this past month. My summers were filled with sun, friends, internships, jobs, and most importantly--sleep.

After I decided last year to pick up a minor in journalism in addition to my business degree, I knew I’d finally have to bite the bullet and take some classes in the summer if I still wanted to gradate on time.

I wasn’t too thrilled with the idea of school when its still 100 degrees out and going back to campus only a week after the Fourth of July (should be a crime, right?)

It's amazing how quickly opinions change.

With less than a week left of the session, I’ve completely changed my thought process on taking classes in the summer.

Summer session is the best for the following 8 reasons:

1. Knock Out An Entire Semester In 5 Weeks

Honestly, all classes should be five weeks long. Just when you get bored of class, boom--there’s only two weeks left.

2. Easy To Recall Info

Since you’re in class everyday, the exam on Monday over material you just talked about is 100% easier. I'd never thought I'd say so, but having class every single day has been a blessing.

3. Projects/Papers Reduced

I can’t tell you how many times this semester I’ve heard “The fall classes have to do this” or “There’s a big project you guys don’t have to do.” So we get half the projects and paper simply because we don’t have time? YESSS.

4. Get To Know Your Classmates

My classes have a lot of group work (not the bad kind where one person ends of up doing all the work *cough* me *cough*). Even without the group work, you’re with these people twice a day, five times a week…you’re going to make some new friends.

5. Better Parking

No more waiting for a car to leave so you can have the ONE parking spot left in East Garage. Front row parking, everyday, no exceptions. #Heaven

6. Graduate Early

Or, graduate on time if you messed up and failed accounting three times. (guilty)

7. Accelerated Learning

I finally have classes I DON'T fall asleep in. We get through the material fast and I don’t feel like I’m wasting my time by being there. I'm getting what I paid for, even though I'd still rather be napping.

8. Online Class

The holy grail of summer (and all) college courses. All the benefits I listed above, PLUS you never have to get out of bed. If you can find summer course that are also online, consider yourself #blessed

I understand sitting in a classroom sucks no matter the time of year. It can seem especially awful when you're supposed to be on "break". But, I'd still rather sit in that classroom for five weeks versus the 15 or more weeks of a normal semester-long course.

But thats just me.

Love,

-A

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
