I remember the first time I ever stumbled across an episode of "Gilmore Girls" on ABC Family, it was like the 8th grade, and I'd just gotten off the bus. I thought, "Oh, this is no good. This could potentially be a detriment to my sleeping patterns, my hygiene, my school work, my social life..."
"Gilmore Girls" is one of those shows that quickly becomes a part of you. You watch it and you disappear into an almost tangible world, where Stars Hollow is your home and Luke's coffee is your elixir. It got me through many freshman year bouts of depression, and continues to be something I'll turn on when I need some instant comfort.
Why are people so obsessed with the "Gilmore Girls?" The writing is smart, the characters are eclectic, the pop-culture references are obscure, but most importantly, the show comes off very genuine and authentic. Each episode gives you that warm feeling inside, because you know you're watching something special.
We love Rory and Lorelai with everything we've got, because the show presents them as such relatable characters. I think this also makes them easy to resent, because if you look back, you can find many ways in which the Gilmores are't very relatable at all. Here are some reasons why we're all so inexplicably jealous of TV's best dynamic duo.
1. Rory Gilmore is the biggest overachiever in history. She put us all to shame with her perfectionist quirks and her genuine need to add more classes to her load or more extracurriculars to her roster. She's more calculative than we could ever wish to be, always hashing out dilemmas with pro/con lists. Acceptance letters to Harvard, Princeton, and Yale? Yeah, she wouldn't be caught dead procrastinating or binge-watching Netflix.
2. Rory read more books within the first two seasons than you've read throughout the entire duration of your life. If you haven't taken that one quiz to see how many of Rory's 331 favorite novels you've read, go ahead, it will make you feel awful.
3. Rory and Lorelai are STUNNING human beings. Their effortless, classic beauty is breath of fresh air...except for when it feels like it's strangling you because who the actual hell looks like that? What's even more remarkable is that, especially in the older seasons, Alexis Bledel hardly wears any makeup.
4. The poise. Even though Rory is a little bit more self-composed, Lorelai can still walk into a PTA meeting at a prestigious private school with a vintage B-52's band-tee on, not giving a care in the world about anyone else's judgmental thoughts. Her unapologetic nature is something extremely covetable to all viewers.
5. The sharp and well-delivered comebacks. Writer Amy Sherman-Palladino should be given mad props for producing a script so saturated with wit and ingenuity. The whole show is famous for being filled with playful banter and outlandish cultural references, further proving just how quirky and cool these ladies are.
6. The perfect mother-daughter relationship. They crawl into bed and eat Chinese takeout together. They quote movies, share clothes, stroke each others hair, gossip, and vent relentlessly. Their relationship is very intimate and their bond is unshakable. Of course, there's no real teenager like Rory, and no mom as cool as Lore; it may leave a lot to be desired when it comes to you and your mom's relationship, but you revel in the two's partnership anyway.
7. The perfect boys they date. We grip our hearts and wipe our eyes enviously as we watch Rory fall for beautiful men like Jess... Logan...even Marty... (Dean's a little Wonderbread but we love him because of his hair flow and that car he built her). Don't even get me STARTED on Luke Danes.
8. All that junk food, absolutely no weight gain. Even though pizza is one of their main food groups, they have no issue maintaining their pristine figures. "People don't realize, but it takes years of training to eat the way we do."- Lorelai.
