Anyone who knows me knows I have been obsessed with Audrey Hepburn since I was a little girl. Here are the top eight reasons why I consider the old Hollywood movie star to be my biggest girl crush.
1. Her style
Let's start with the obvious: Audrey had impeccable style. While most people know her for the little black dress and giant sunglasses she wore in "Breakfast at Tiffany's," Audrey is a fashion icon who paired up with designer Hubert de Givenchy for most of her career. Givenchy was the costume designer for the 1953 film "Sabrina" (pictured), and from then on he was her style guru. Audrey is known for her ballerina flats, staple color black and simple yet elegant pieces.
2. Her humor
Gregory Peck once said of Audrey, "She's a very funny lady...I have always thought that she should have played more comedy...it's not that she hasn't had a great career...but I wish she had been allowed to do a few broad comedies along the way" ("Audrey Hepburn" by Christine Kidney). Audrey often showed her quick wit and quirkiness through the characters she played.3. Her kind heart
While most people remember Audrey as a fashion icon and actress, she is lesser known for her work as a humanitarian. In 1988, Audrey became a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, and was particularly concerned with helping the world's children. Audrey's trips with UNICEF took her to Bangladesh, the Sudan, Ethiopia, El Salvador, Vietnam and Somalia.4. Her class
Personally, I think Audrey would be appalled by some of the "Instagram models" of today. Audrey was the definition of classy, displaying a sophisticated yet sexy demeanor wherever she went.
5. Her talent
Before Audrey became an actress, she actually wanted to be a prima ballerina. In fact, during the Dutch Resistance in World War II, Audrey danced in secret productions to raise money for the resistance at age 14. However, after studying dance, it was decided that she was too tall to be a professional dancer. While Audrey's career took off as an actress, she had the opportunity to practice her dancing in musical films such as "Funny Face" (1957) and "My Fair Lady" (1964). Audrey also showcased her beautiful singing voice in these films, as well as in the famous "Moon River" scene in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961).
6. Her success
During Audrey's time as an actress, she had roles in 33 films. Audrey had a grand total of 39 nominations during her career and won 23 of these. Along with these, Audrey also won the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992 and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1993 for her work with UNICEF. That's what I would call a #girlboss!
7. Her intelligence
It is little known that Audrey was bilingual in English and Dutch, and was fluent in Italian, Spanish, German and French. This helped her immensely in her travels with UNICEF. Audrey also said some of the most simple yet inspiring quotes. My personal favorite is "The most important thing is to enjoy your life - to be happy - it's all that matters."
8. Her modesty
Audrey once said, "I never think of myself as an icon. What is in other people's minds is not in my mind. I just do my thing." Audrey was never one to gloat or be pompous when it came to her fame and success. Many actors and actresses who worked with her spoke fondly and thought of Audrey as a friend. She always appeared down to earth and was not much of a bragger.
9. Her pet fawn
I mean, c'mon. How cute is this? Audrey had an adorable pet fawn named Pippin that showed how much she loves animals.
It is easy to see why I aspire to be like Audrey. With all of her accomplishments and characteristics, Audrey established herself as a strong female role model during her lifetime. I hope that females (and males) everywhere look up to Audrey as much as I do.
