Last Saturday, after receiving tickets for Christmas, I was lucky enough to see Adele perform live at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. It's no secret that Adele has a strong, passion-charged voice and absolutely puts all of her heart and soul into every note, but it was also her lyrics alone that literally brought me to tears more than once throughout the concert. Here are some of my personal favorites.
1. "Should I give up..."
"...Or should I just keep chasing pavements? Even if it leads nowhere..." -"Chasing Pavements"
Maybe it's because I'm in college but I can immediately relate to this lyric. Being in a sort of a transitionary period in my life, I'm still trying to figure out exactly what I'm supposed to be doing, where I'm meant to be, who I'm meant to be even. But from the way I interpret the song, she's singing about going after your wildest aspirations and dreams even if you're not sure how everything will work out in the end. Who knows? It just might be worth it.
2. "Just 'cause I said it, it don't mean that I meant it..."
"...People say crazy things..." -"Rumor Has It"
I love this lyric because of how much attitude it conveys. Adele certainly is not shy about calling out those who have wronged her in the past. Sometimes you just gotta get back at someone with some sass when the initial message is lost. Get it, girl. Take no prisoners.
3. "Whatever words I say I will always love you..."
-"Love Song"
This somewhat contradicts the previous lyric in terms of attitude but the theme is somewhat similar. We all say things to the people that we care about that we don't really mean. In a moment of stress or anger, we lash out at those that love us the most. My inclusion of this particular lyric is like my own personal disclaimer; look, I can be stubborn and my anxieties can occasionally render me into a complete mess. Don't let all that fool you, I still love you.
4. "Let me photograph you in this light..."
"... In case it is the last time
That we might be exactly like we were..." - "When We Were Young"
(This is when the tears really started flowing.) This entire song, this lyric especially, has anostalgic feel to it. There will always be people from our pasts that for one reason or another are no longer a part of our lives. It's hard- fond memories of others can make it hard to let go. Don't completely forget these memories, but also realize that it's OK to move on. Keep living your life.
5. "When it crumbles, we will stand tall..."
"...Face it all together..." - "Skyfall"
I could be biased because "Skyfall" is one of my favorite James Bond movies, but these lyrics are a reminder that no matter how dark the world gets, you can pull through any situation with the right support. (I also learned how to play this song on piano despite never having one lesson!)
6. "I set fire to the rain..."
"...watched it pour as I touched your face..." - "Set Fire to the Rain"
I can't lie, I just think that this use of imagery is epic. During her performance, Adele stood in the center of a square as rain poured around her. It was sweet.
7. "...I'm giving you up..."
"...I've forgiven it all, you set me free..."- "Send My Love"
A lot of closure is implied here. Sometimes being set free and forgiving someone who's wronged you in the past is exactly what's best. Take care of yourself, delete toxic people from your life. You deserve "nothing but the best."
8. "I like it in the city when two worlds collide..."
"You get the people and the government, everybody taking different sides..." -"Hometown Glory"
I feel like this is especially relevant to our world today. There are always going to be opposing views to any situation, people always arguing, people always rushing to make sure they're heard. Yet, it's this friction that excites us- we thrive on it. Who wants to live in a world where "nothing ever happens"?
