8 Ingredients For The Perfect Long Island Summer
American City and County

Summer on the island. There is nothing like it. There is something about the warm weather and closed schools that makes Long Island come to life. Growing up here I never understood the kids that would go to sleep away camp upstate for the summer; how could you leave such a wonderful place for two whole months? Do you know all the awesome things you’re missing out on? Sure, camp seems fun, but I bet they don’t have Ralph’s Italian ices there. Here are the necessary ingredients for a kick-a** summer on Long Island.

1. The Beach

You all knew that had to be first. You can’t think of Long Island without thinking of the beach. Long Island -- duh. A good summer is one with more beach days than non-beach days. Whether you go to Jones with all the tourists or the more secluded Tobay, ocean is ocean. Bonus points if you go to watch the Blue Angels on Memorial Day. Double bonus points for late-night beach bonfires.

2. Ralph's

You will probably be here enough times this summer to try every flavor at least twice, but you know you’re going to order the same thing every time. One scoop Red Velvet and one Peanut Butter Candy Bar Fudge for me, please. Opening day is a holiday and closing day is sadder than the day after Christmas, so fill up while you can.

3. Driving Around at Night

Just grab the keys, a few friends, and drive. The Ocean Parkway is a whole different world after 10 p.m. Open the windows, blast the music, and soak in the summer air. Nothing is more freeing than being behind the wheel while the rest of the Island is sleeping.

4. A Day Trip to the City

Sure, it’s beautiful at Christmastime, but you

were probably bundled up under so many layers that you barely saw the tree. Go again in the warm weather when you’re not speed walking from one building to the next for warmth. Walk through Central Park, try a new restaurant, and enjoy the greatest city in the world.

5. Pools

Walk downstairs. Open your back door. Lay out by your pool all day. And repeat. Sometimes we take for granted the beauty of having a pool right in your (or a friend’s) backyard. But great summer days are spent reading a book while you float around your pool until your brother pushes you into the water.

6. Bonfires

There’s always the one friend with the great fire pit and your group seems to find themselves ending their summer days there quite often. Don’t forget the graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate. See who could eat the most s’mores and then sit there talking and laughing for four more hours. Time has a funny way of flying by when you’re surrounded by friends and fire.

7. Biking

What better way to maintain your summer body? Biking is fantastic exercise that’s actually fun-a rare finding for sure. Take the bike trail down to the beach or (attempt) to get in touch with nature and drag a friend with you down one of the trails at a town park like Wantagh or Bethpage. Or even just bike around your neighborhood. You’ll feel accomplished, and maybe a bit sore, but it’s worth it.

8. Jones Beach Concert

No Long Island summer is complete without attending a concert at Nikon Theater at Jones Beach. Huge parking lot to tailgate in beforehand. Great view of the stage at any seat. Beautiful view of the bay literally right behind the stage. And your favorite band live. Could it get better? No, the answer is no.

This is just a small list of the endless possibilities for Long Island summer fun. Wherever you go, whatever you do, you can’t go wrong in this great place. So write that final paper, pack up that dorm room, and go! Long Island is calling.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
