Every student at one point or another struggles to complete homework or find the motivation to sit down and start their homework. As the years go by, homework becomes more and more pointless, especially in a teenager's mind. Most teens think "well I spend all day in this place, why do I have to spend my personal time doing more work that I don't care about anyway." Truth is, although no student wants to hear it, homework helps the brain learn the material better in a private setting rather than in a public classroom setting.
1. Find a Quiet Place to Work
When preparing to complete homework, it is always a good idea to find a quiet place where you are not likely to be bothered. This helps eliminate distractions and helps you focus without the unnecessary background noise that prevents all students from thinking normally. It is easier to complete homework assignments when there is no other noise because it ensures that the brain only has to process the assignment rather than multiple things at once.
2. Give Yourself Time
Completing homework assignments to the best of your ability requires patience, focus, thought, and above all, Time. If you put off your homework assignment until 11 o'clock at night, you rush to finish it before you go to bed, which means that you are not doing the assignment to the best of your ability. When an assignment is not done to the best of your ability, not only does your teacher notice, but it does not give you the knowledge of the material that every student needs in order to do well in that class. If you give yourself enough time by starting your homework earlier, you give yourself the ability to focus and think about what the assignment is and therefore you obtain more knowledge from the material.
3. Collaborate with Classmates
Most often than not, when a student is completing homework, they get stumped on a question they do not understand, they either make up and answer or skip the question all together. Rather than doing this and not absorbing the information into your mind, think about calling up a classmate for help. If you do not understand a question, most likely there is a classmate who does understand the question. This tactic can benefit you and your classmate because you can both ask questions on the homework that neither one of you would have done had you not called the classmate, which results in both of you getting better grades.
4. Look Back into Your Notes
If you get stuck on a homework assignment, there is nothing that says you can't look back into your notes from the class, in fact that tactic is encouraged. If you truly are stumped by the question, looking back into your notes can help refresh your memory of the lesson learned in class, and help you remember the material by looking at it a second time.
5. Make Notes on Certain Problems that Confuse You
When completing homework assignments, especially on a new topic, you are going to be confused, as are all students. If you truly do not understand the problem, try it, and write a side note on the assignment. When the teacher or professor checks the homework, ask for an explanation, because most likely you are not the only one in the class who had the same question.
6. Apply Yourself
There is no point in not putting effort into a homework assignment. There are two options when completing homework; To do it or to not do it. There is no half done homework. And when you do not apply yourself when you do your homework, the only person you are hurting is yourself. The teacher does not care whether you pass the class or not, the only person who should care is you. The teacher already knows the material, and therefore is not affected if you do not complete the homework. The intention of homework is to give you extra knowledge outside of what was learned in class that is meant to help you on the test. Although all students think "When am I going to need this in the real world," it is much needed knowledge in order to pass the class. Half done homework is just a waste of valuable time.
7. Find What Works for You
If sitting in complete silence does not work for you, then find what does work. Some students like complete silence, sitting at the kitchen table and being completely organized, while others enjoy music, their bed and everything spread out all over in a mess. If what you are doing now does not work for you, find your happy place to do homework. If you know you do not work well at night, consider doing your homework right after school.
8. Be on Time
Do not procrastinate. Although every student procrastinates their assignments from time to time, it is a bad habit to conceal. By being prompt, you leave room for mistakes, emergencies, and malfunctions when completing assignments. If you wait until the last day to complete an assignment, there is a larger chance of there being an issue with being able to complete or hand in the assignment on time which results in a lower grade for you. Now imagine if that C could have been an A if you had just decided to do the assignment the day it was assigned?
It takes work to get good grades in school, but imagine if you could turn your grades around just by completing your homework assignments? It is amazing how much better your grades will be after you start completing your assignments on time and to the best of your ability. You will remember more information from classes than you ever thought possible and you will see your grades come up.
