Every New Year, thousands of people find themselves making unrealistic promises about their future selves. Most New Year resolutions include phrases such as, "I resolve to work out daily" or "I resolve to put X amount of my monthly income in savings." Although these promises are made with the very best intentions, they are just unrealistic for most people to tackle and often leave us feeling unfulfilled. This year, try to stray away from that sort of resolution and think in broader terms.
1. Learn to say "No."
I find that for most, myself included, one of that hardest things to do is say no. We are so afraid of disappointing someone or coming off as rude and often it infringes on our own happiness. This year, realize that saying no does not make you a killjoy, boring, nasty, etc. It is simply you making a decision for yourself that others should respect.
2. Remove the toxic people from your life.
It may not seem like it right now, but cutting ties with certain people can significantly improve quality of life. If someone is constantly making you upset, eventually excuses are going to run out and there will only be one solution.
3. Think healthier.
This applies both mentally and physically. Think about what both your body and mind will thank you for. Eating healthy and exercising are beneficial to both your physique and psyche; however, so is having a positive opinion of yourself.
4. Step out of your comfort zone.
I am in no way saying go sky diving or bungee jumping, but giving yourself a taste of something different won't hurt you. Go take dancing lessons, learn to cook, go to a concert out of your typical music taste. If you don't like it your old favorite will be there waiting for you.
5. Become more educated.
You don't need to be in class to further your education. Pick up a new book, start reading the newspaper, talk to new people, explore new places. The amount of culture and history in every city is outstanding. There is so much to be learned by striking up a conversation with a random person in a coffee place, taking a book from the free book pile, actually buying that newspaper for $2.25, or even adventuring around your city.
6. Meet new people.
Yes, our current friends and family are awesome and we love them, but meeting new people is always an eye-opening experience. There is so much to learn from another person, let alone a stranger. Everyone has a unique story, so image how much could be learned if you were to just speak to one new person a month.
7. Spread kindness.
Doing charity work is one of the most fulfilling things I have done all year. Although many things make me happy or bring me a smile, nothing makes me as genuinely happy as making a difference even if it is small. This year join a community service club, or do community service on your own time at home.
8. Learn to love yourself.
Personal acceptance is difficult. There is not one person who is good at everything. The world is an ecosystem and we all have a niche, find yours and appreciate it. Don't dwell on what you cannot do. There is a reason everyone is different, if not for that life would be boring.
Whatever you set out to do this year, just make sure that it will truly improve your life, fulfill you, and most importantly make you happy.
