We have seen everything lately, from rainbow bagels to ramen burgers. Even the trendiest of foods out there seem to be a little extreme. Here are a few of the more popular food trends that we are tired of seeing.
Sushirrito
As a sushi lover, the idea of just having to buy one sushi roll as opposed to picking out a few seems like both a money saver and a genius idea. In reality, sushi is a lot better small. The beauty of the sushi roll is the idea that you have a bite-sized piece already there and portioned out for you. Biting into a sushirrito is not only difficult (think of that first bite that you take into a regular burrito, but instead of rice and beans, there is now raw fish spilled out all over your plate). While this seems like a bright idea, it is poorly executed.
Substituting Cauliflower For Carbs
Low-carb options of your favorite dishes are all the rage these days. Pinterest is booming with ideas like cauliflower fried rice and cauliflower pizza crust. You can have your pizza and eat it too! Eating all of your favorite dishes without all of the guilty feelings afterward, what could be better? In reality, in no world is cauliflower ever going to taste as good or as satisfying as the real thing.
Meal Replacement Smoothies
These became trendy as an effective way to lose weight. However, it has been proven time and time again that the true way to satisfy hunger is the act of chewing itself. Liquidizing your favorite foods won’t necessarily do the trick. Add as much protein powder as you want, but nothing is the same as sinking your teeth into your favorite dish.
Calories On Menus
You are going to your favorite sandwich place. You cannot wait for your favorite chicken bacon club panini. As you look at the menu, you realize that they have added the calories next to each food option. 2,000 calories?! Suddenly, you have lost your appetite. Why ruin all of our favorite foods by letting us know just how bad they are for us? The less that we know, the better (I'm taking to you, Panera).
Going Gluten-free/ Dairy-free
With the exception of those who are gluten or dairy intolerant, those who choose this lifestyle are typically pretty uneducated about all of the parts of their diet that have gluten or dairy in them. It sounds like a good idea to limit these foods, but carbs and dairy actually provide our bodies with important daily nutrients. So, please, spare your waiter the endless questions about all the ingredients on the menu and just stick to a balanced diet.
E-Coli With Your Burrito
It seems like more and more of our favorite companies have been recalling their food lately. Chipotle and Mars Candy (Think: Milky Way, Snickers bars) are just a few of the big ones. Even the McDonald’s pink slime incident still hangs over our heads every time we indulge in some chicken nuggets. We are tired of walking on eggshells when devouring our favorite foods. Get your act together, people!
Mini Versions Of Food
This trend may have started with desserts alone. Mini-cupcakes, cookies, and candy bars seem like the perfect way to satisfy your cravings without all the guilt. Now, the trend seems to have spread to cheeseburgers, meatballs, and hotdogs! In reality, if I am craving a fat, juicy cheeseburger, a micro-version of it will not satisfy me. I’ll take 10 of the mini-cheeseburgers, please! It seems a little counter-productive, doesn’t it?
Breakfast For Dinner
I'm just kidding. This trend is genius and satisfying.McDonald’s breakfast available 24 hours a day? Sign me up!
