From first time goers to festival fanatics, the key survival tips for Austin City Limits apply across the board. The annual three-day festival held on two consecutive weeks in Zilker Park continuously attracts an enormous crowd of music lovers. With a diverse lineup, eight separate stages, and over 110 bands appealing to an array of music interests, there is a good chance that you will find yourself falling deeply in love. Not only is the music beyond awesome, but so is the delicious food which includes some of the most craved Austin vendors. Austin’s Pizza, Amy’s Ice Cream, JuiceLand, Bananarchy, P. Terry’s, Torchy’s and Tiff’s Treats are just a few popular eateries that have made an ACL appearance. Once you experience even just a few hours of this acclaimed event, you will never again question why Austin, Texas is known as the live music capital of the world…
But in order to get the full-fledged experience, you have to be properly equipped to handle the long day/weekend or in some cases…weekends.
1. Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate.
Should I say it again? Hydrate. If you want to make it out alive, drink water! Combining Texas heat with thousands of energetic music lovers smashed together in front of a stage, does not always end up well. Bring a CamelBak bag or attach a water bottle to a backpack/purse so your H2O is always handy. Plus, there are F-R-E-E hydration stations that allow for continuous refills.
2. Dress to impress from the waist up.
We all know that you have spent forever and a day picking out the perfect festival outfits, but do not sacrifice your comfort for an insta-worthy picture. Wedges, booties and sandals are fantastic but not the shoe of choice for an event like ACL. There is a ton of walking and you will get stepped on a few more times than you bargained for when jamming out in front of your favorite artist. Dress cute and wear comfortable shoes. Leave the ankle-breaking footwear at home.
3. Kiss your phone goodbye.
For some, you may literally never see your phone again because one too many have fallen into the hands of the wrong people (hide valuables in the main compartment of your backpack… not the easily accessible front pocket). But in most cases, just put the time-wasting electronic away and enjoy the day because you will have terrible service. If you are going with a group, come up with a place to meet at certain times before you head into the park. It is easy to get separated from your friends and you will feel as if you are living in the butter-churning days without phone communication.
4. Extra cash is a must.
Even if you did link your credit card to your wristband, bring a few extra dollars. The days are long, it is very hot and you will do a considerable amount of walking which only furthers your need for food and drinks. Although the water is free, you may long for a fresh lemonade. And eating is essential, especially if you skip out on a meal before attending the festival. So bring that extra cash because it will come in handy at some point.
5. Sunglasses.
There is a good chance that it will be bright outside for a majority of the day. Instead of squinting to see what is in front of you, just pack a pair of sunglasses. Plus, shades can always make you look good in pictures, no matter how much you are sweating.
6. Do not let the clouds fool you.
Even though the sun may not be shining, you will still get a good tan…or burn. If you and the sun have never bonded very well, you should consider bringing a small bottle of sunscreen (non-aerosol). Sunburns are never fun, especially when you have an important 3-day festival to attend.
7. Buddy system.
Being alone in the middle of thousands of unfamiliar faces can be a scary situation. Avoid having a panic attack and just stick with at least one friend at all times.
8. Plan a ride back.
Do not “go with the flow” when it comes to getting home. You may think that you will be able to just wing a ride back, but that does not work after an event like ACL. Fasten, Lyft, Ride Austin, and all the other popular driving services will leave your bank account strained due to their high demand spike in prices. And forget about phoning a friend for a ride because that reception is still slacking. My advice is to map out the bus stops and catch one at your convenience. If you are a student, simply bring your ID and you can travel for free!!
ACL really is the place to be. And by following these tips, you will be ready for the time of your life. It truly is an experience like no other.
