Incoming college freshmen — I know that if you're like I was the summer before my freshman fall semester, you're most likely researching all the ways to be successful in college. So I decided to help you out by giving you a list of things to help you thrive your first year in college.
1. Be prepared to talk to people all the time.
No matter what your major is, what dorm you're living in, or what clubs you're involved in — you will have to talk to people all the time. You will have meetings, class discussions, and you will also meet tons of people, so learn to come out of your shell a little bit.
2. Expect to change your major several times.
Some freshmen get lucky and they choose the right major the first time, but most freshmen end up changing majors not only once but a few times — I know I did. And that's okay to change your mind. It's natural so don't get discouraged or disappointed in yourself.
3.Be prepared to study a lot.
College is not anything like high school. In high school you could most likely just read over your class notes and do fine on the test, but in college it takes a lot more studying and researching than that. Be prepared to put a lot more effort into your classes than you did in high school.
4. Learn to live on a budget.
I'm still struggling with this one, but I promise it will be worth it to you if you prepare yourself to save a little bit of money here and there. Also, every college meal plan has loopholes that can help you out if you're smart about it.
5. Go to every interest meeting you have even the slightest curiosity about.
You never know what you could be successful in or what opportunity an organization offers, so make yourself attend interest meetings no matter how tired and worn down you are. An organization you might not have even heard of might end up being your favorite thing about college.
6. Learn to take chances.
At some point during your first year of college, you will most likely want to interview to be in a club or organization, hold an executive position, or even maybe start a new campus organization. So, be prepared to take chances so you can reach your full potential.
7. Do everything, meet anyone, see everything.
Yes you will be exhausted and drained nearly every day, but take part in everything that you can. Go out with your friends, go explore your college town, and learn how to thrive in all areas of your college experience.
