After visiting the Big Apple for the fourth time, I realized that I was starting to get the hang of the busy streets, packed subways, and lack of eye contact with the people selling things in the streets. I’ve fallen in love with the city and even though I realize Times Square is the biggest tourist trap of all time, I still manage to stand in awe of it, wide eyed and bushy tailed, basking in its beauty and wonder. But every time I visit this great city, I’d like to think I become less of a tourist and more of a native. While you decide to explore the city that never sleeps, follow these simple tips and tricks to avoid looking like a tourist.

1. Let your “Maps” app guide you

Plug your destination into your maps app and Siri will help you get there by car, feet, or transit. You can decide which route is easiest and best for you. That way, you avoid asking strangers for directions.

2. Always carry headphones with you

Not only can you stay entertained while walking four miles to your next destination, but you will also be able to hide the fact that Siri is giving you step by step instructions on how to get to Central Park.

3. Just start walking

Sometimes the greatest adventures are the things you weren’t expecting to find. Just start walking and maybe you’ll find something wonderful.

4. Take the road less traveled

Step away from the busy streets and the crowds of tourists. They walk too slowly anyway.

5. Learn how to use the subway

There is nothing worse than using a taxi in New York. They are expensive and slow and traffic and driving are a nightmare. Learn how to use the subway and you’ll be a New Yorker yet. Learning the difference between Uptown and Downtown, or the NQR and the 123 will save you time and money. Just be careful with the express train or you’ll end up seven stops from where you need to be.

6. Carry an umbrella

Because walking is such an integral part of New York City, a little rain never slows it down. Make sure to carry an umbrella because being caught without one could leave you soaked.

7. Eat and Eat and Eat

Try new foods, enjoy $1 pizza, and don’t stop at chain restaurants like Olive Garden or Applebee’s. Although endless breadsticks always seem like a great idea, branch out and enjoy the flavors of the city.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
