College is a lot different than high school, in many ways. The biggest difference and probably the hardest adjustment to make (other than leaving home) is readjusting your study and organization habits to fit a college schedule. You spend a lot less time in class, but this means you need to actually do work outside of class, and if you're like me then that's a big change from high school. Here are a few simple techniques I used to make the Dean's List freshman year, without breaking my brain.
1. Be organized!
It doesn't take too much effort to stay organized, just plug your classes into the calendar app on your phone and be sure to write down your assignments, even if you just have to read a chapter. I highly suggest getting a nice planner (even you have to splurge).
2. Find small slots of time to read your textbook.
Textbooks are boring, they're huge and no one can sit and read through one for hours without wanting to die. But unlike high school you actually have to read your textbook (for most courses). What works best is finding twenty minutes in between classes or work to get a few pages read, and then come back and read more later.
3. Form study groups.
Make some friends in your classes, or even just study with your roommate. It's a lot easier to stay focused when you have people motivating you. Plus it's more fun.
4. Make flashcards.
You don't even need to make physical flash cards. I used this website and their app to study while I was in my room and while I was on the go. The app made it super nice, and I didn't have to worry about losing the flashcards.
5. Ask questions if you have them.
Go in to your professor's office hours and ask about the syllabus or ask for clarification on a definition. Use them-they're there to help you. So are your TA's and even your classmates, there;s no such thing as a dumb questions so ask away.
6. Take your time on tests.
Don't feel rushed to finish, a lot of professors will let you stay late if need be. Reread the questions and make sure you've chosen the best answer.
7. Proofread your essays.
Have a friend look them over, or take them to your campus writing center. Having little spelling mistakes will make you look way less intelligent and can hinder you grade.
8. Give yourself a few breaks.
Now I'm saying you should skip class, but take a few naps and go get food with your friends. It's important to focus on more than just school.
