For some, awkwardness isn’t just those middle school days spent meandering the hallways rocking metal braces, acne, and a middle part. Cringe.
For some, awkwardness is a way of life, a lifelong commitment, as they were “fortunate” enough to inherit the permanently awkward gene. These are the folks that consistently think that guy over there is waving to them, when in reality he is waving at the person directly behind them.
To these poor souls, I say fear not as I have created a list of TV characters that are easily relatable when you’re feeling, well, awkward:
1. Barb from Stranger Things
Are you the friend that always gets asked to go to parties? Except you weren’t really invited; you were merely dragged by your BFF, so that she can ditch you 10 minutes in to meet up with her dream boyfriend. If so, Barb’s your girl!
2. Shoshanna from Girls
Shoshanna is your TV avatar if you often find yourself carrying on long and meaningful conversations on the first date, despite the fact that your date hasn’t opened his mouth once. No matter how uncomfortable the situation, you always have something to say…and then some.
3. Larry David from Curb Your Enthusiasm
Have you ever witnessed a person randomly run in to someone they loosely recognize, act like they ran into their BFF, engage in small talk, then proceed to cut a whole line of people waiting in line for food? It’s what Larry David likes to refer to as the “Chat and Cut.” If you’ve ever observed a real-life chat and cut and felt the need to speak up, despite the awkwardness it may bring about, you will find comfort in watching Larry David’s misadventures throughout the eight seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
4. Matt Saracen from Friday Night Lights
Adorable? Yes. Athletic? Check! So, why aren’t you flooded with date requests? You can’t hold eye contact and ultimately choke when approached by members of the opposite sex. Don’t sweat it though, just like Matt Saracen, one day your endearing personality will outweigh your awkwardness and you will score the girl!
5. Stevie from Eastbound and Down
Ever been described as painstakingly awkward? By that I mean you are so awkward that you forget how to act like a functioning human being when you come near someone who is cooler than you. If so, you will find comfort in watching Stevie idolize his hero, Kenny Powers.
6.Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory
If you are just as nerdy as you are awkward, Sheldon will give you real hope that you can find a group of link-minded individuals. Take after Sheldon by embracing your inner-geek!
7. Michael Scott from The Office
Do you play out long winded jokes several times in your mind, but when you actually say them aloud they just don’t come out right? Crickets. Just like Michael Scott, you have no concept of how to properly execute a smooth recovery.
Awkward souls rejoice; No matter your level of gawkiness, you are represented well on television.
