As you prepare for your freshmen year of college, I'm sure you are filled with nerves and questions. You're wondering about your classes, about the people you'll meet and about your new home environment. You are probably filled with anticipation, yet hesitation. Take a deep breath, you'll be fine. Here are seven tips to keep in mind as you embrace your freshmen year.
1.) Buy a planner.
A planner is super important and will help you keep track of everything you need to do. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy, just be sure you have space to write in all your assignments and obligations.
2.) Don’t lose your syllabus.
Your syllabus for each class is the golden key to earning a high grade in that course. It will contain everything you need to know about the course and all of the important dates.
3.) Join something.
Join an organization, club, sports team, etc. Whatever your interests may be find a group that encompasses your passions and become involved. This is a great way to learn more about your interests and to meet people with similar interests as you.
4.) Study…
Plan time everyday to study. Even if your professors don’t give you new work, just take some time to review past assignments. Cramming before midterms and finals is not fun.
5.) Explore the surrounding area.
You may find some great places within a short distance from your school that become one of your favorite escapes from campus.
6.) Don’t over pack.
Firstly, you do not want to have to carry a lot of stuff and unpack it. Secondly, you don’t need as much as you may think and keep in mind that you will probably accumulate more items as the year progresses and you only have so much space.
7.) Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Yes, you’re an adult and you're supposed to be able to handle things on your own but, college (and life) is a learning process. So ask questions, talk to your professors, your RA or your advisor. The most important lesson you can learn from college is that you will make mistakes but you can learn from them and sometimes you might need a little help.
