1. Your Dog

No matter how annoying they can be or how many times the bark at anything and everything, your dog will probably be one of the first things you miss. You never totally get over waking up in your twin sized bed without having your dog at your feet and will probably make your parents put them on FaceTime because obviously they probably miss you too.

2. Your Bed

Speaking of waking up, it will not take hardly any time before you realize how much you miss sleeping in your own bed in your own room at home. 99.9% of dorm beds are not even comparable to what you might be used to.

3. Home Food

Dining hall food does not taste like food from home. At. All. It's half decent at best and you will probably find yourself missing fruits and vegetables just as much as your mom's homemade chicken noodle soup.

4. Your Friends

Maybe you loved high school, maybe you hated it, but when you leave the people that helped you get through it all, you cannot help but feel like a little piece of you is missing because it is still with the ones you love. There's nothing like the familiarity of your favorite places to shop with your friends or your week night movie traditions. College is great and so are the people, but the ones who have known you at your worst will always hold a special place.

5. Your Car

If you are not lucky enough to take a car on campus your freshman year, you quickly realize how much you miss the freedom that comes with having a vehicle at your disposal. Relying on other people for rides to Target and the grocery store is a big adjustment, you might even find yourself missing the days when your parents would give you a long list of errands to run.

6. Your Mom

Or whoever it is in your life that has taken care of you and helped you get to this point. You'll find yourself missing her, no matter how many arguments, missed curfews, and life choice lectures that she seemed to annoy you with in high school. Being on your own is awesome but sometimes it's nice to hear your mom's voice, regardless of whether she is calling to see how your day was or calling to yell at you when she sees your Amazon bill.

7. Your Hometown

Even if you hated the town that you lived in or found yourself irreparably bored with life there, small things while you are away remind you of home and make you wish that you could go home even just for a second to see familiar faces at the grocery store and your neighbors crazy dogs when you go for a run.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
