Going into my Freshman year of college, I wasn't too sure what to expect. Before my first day of college, I had visited the campus I committed to only one time before I moved.
That being said, here are a few things I wish I had known as a Freshman:
1. No one cares.
No one cares how you dress, or how put together you are. Heck, people don't care if you sleep on the grass in the quad. Everybody else is to busy doing their own thing to care about what you're doing. So if you want to wear sweatpants every day, go for it. Nobody is judging you because nobody actually gives a damn.
2. High School doesn't matter anymore.
While it's great to reminisce and tell your new friends about what clubs you were involved in or what sport you lettered in, it doesn't matter anymore. College is a fresh start, and a new beginning, so who you were isn't as important as who you are now.
3. Make friends outside of your dorm.
You can and will get sick of all the people you live with. So make friends with people you don't have to see everyday.
4. DON'T BUY TEXTBOOKS FROM THE BOOKSTORE!
IT'S A SCAM! One: You might not even crack the thing open. Two: Renting is so much cheaper, and let's be honest, after the semester is over, you will never use that book again. Save yourself the money, and rent the book off Amazon. Only go to the bookstore if you hate having money.
5. Your High School 'study habits' won't work here.
Half ass studying and writing papers the night before won't even get you a C, let alone that A that always came so easily. Start studying or writing days in advance. The 'fake-it-til-you-make-it' approach doesn't work.
6. Being lazy isn't an excuse to miss class.
Yes, it's early. Yes, you're running on four hours of sleep. Yes, your class is on the other side of campus. And yes, you're going to be late anyway. But freaking go! You are paying too much money to skip that class! And the more information you absorb from the teacher in class, the less you have to study when you get home.
7. GET SOME SLEEP!
If it's a week day and you're awake at one in the morning, but you're not cramming for a midterm the next day, GO TO BED! When you don't sleep, you can't focus, you become more stressed out, you're more likely to get sick, and it makes it that much harder to go to class, and be productive. There's a very short list of acceptable reasons as to why your butt should be out of bed at two in the morning, and watching Netflix or socializing with the people in your building isn't on that list.
