“Random selection": These are two of the most terrifying words for anyone entering dorm life at college. For some, the outcome of this random selection is less than favorable. Lucky for me, I hit the jackpot and could not have asked for a better roommate this year. Here are some of the things I would most like to thank her for:
1. For not being a psychopath.
Everyone has thought about the worst case scenario when it comes to roommate possibilities. I was quite convinced that I would get stuck with someone who would use me as human sacrifice in the middle of the night. Lucky for me, my roommate is just at the appropriate level of crazy.
2. For accepting and understanding my sleeping habits.
The sleep schedule of a college student is far from normal, and each individual student actually varies in their own schedules. I am happy to say that I have never had a problem going to sleep when I have needed to, and this includes my 5 p.m. naps after a day of classes.
3. For being hilarious.
College is ridiculously stressful. Thankfully, no matter how bad of a day I have had with my exams or my classes, I know that when I go back to my room, my roommate is going to be able to make me laugh and I will instantly feel better.
4. For having my back.
College involves late nights and lots of people; life can get a little crazy. No matter what happens though, I know my roommate will have my back no matter what. Even if I simply need something from the store, she will make sure I have what I need, always.
5. For being herself.
I have honestly never met a person with a more engaging personality than my roommate. She has taught me that it is completely okay to speak my mind and to simply be me without needing to hold back any part of who I am.
6. For understanding the struggle.
Get good grades. Join these clubs. Have a social life. Get enough sleep. These are the things we are constantly expected to do as college students. Do you know how possible it is to do all of these things? It's not. But, things are much easier to deal with when there is someone there to go through it with you.
7. For being there when I really need her.
Leaving home and living on my own is not always the easiest thing for me to deal with. I put a lot of pressure on myself and sometimes it can be too much. Whenever I have one of these moments I can always count on my roommate to be there and to be real with me. Real advice like this is invaluable during hard times and it is for this, I would say, that I am most grateful.
