A few of my teachers this year have made it quite clear that there is to be absolutely NO TECHNOLOGY USE in the classroom... and it blows my mind. Sure, I get that technology is just a tool.. but technology is ALSO the future.
Teachers need to seamlessly integrate it into their curriculums, instead of looking at it as an add-on, an afterthought, or even an event. And simply putting technology in front of your students is not going to engage them in the lesson.
Let me also state that I do not agree with the students that go to class and watch Netflix on their laptops for the entire lecture... but there are a lot more benefits to using technology than some teachers would like to admit.
Now, I definitely don't believe that technology will ever fully replace teachers, but I do believe that a smart teacher should incorporate technology into their classroom for many reasons.
1. If I can't make it to the class that day, I shouldn't have to put up a fight to get the notes.
Like, come on.They created Blackboard for a reason. It's honestly not rocket science and doesn't take a ton of extra time to simply share the notes with EVERYONE AT ONCE.
2. Some teachers simply go through too much, too fast, and all in one lecture.
I'm definitely that girl in class that has to raise her hand and is all, "Can you go back a slide because I missed that last part?" Like, I'M SORRY I'M NOT A SUPERHUMAN AND CAN'T TYPE A MILE A MINUTE.
3. Other teachers believe that technology is interfering with our learning as a whole... but they're not even giving it a chance.
This "Teacher Confession" is completely right. Technology is what connects us to each other now. Sure, you can have relationships with your peers and people from your town, but without our curiosity towards technology, we would be nowhere. Teach me how to integrate what I'm doing in class with modern technology and then we'll be getting somewhere.
4. Inserting technology into the classroom is not the end goal.
The end goal is enabling learning everywhere and making it possible for everyone to learn the adequate and up-to-date material.
5. How am I supposed to be expected to not stress an insane amount about my grades if you aren't going to keep me posted on the grades I am getting?
Back to the Blackboard issue, why is this technology not being put to use? If you know my grades, don't keep them a secret from me...?
6. Most careers use up-to-date technology and rely on the employees to know how to use it before being hired.
How are we going to learn this type of stuff if you just show it to us in a slideshow on the screen? Let us use it. Let us learn how to be successful in the modern world.
7. Just because I glanced at my phone to check a message from my boss, does not mean you are allowed to give me an absence for your class and/or count it against my grade.
I'm the Editor in Chief for Odyssey at Purdue University...which means my phone is always blowing up with questions and requests from creators. I NEED to be accessible to them because I am their main resource on campus for anything Odyssey related (or anything else) they need. Me answering a quick question should not give you the right to dock points off my grade or say that I didn't even show up to class?
