Dorming at college. It's something that everyone should most definitely experience, but it certainly comes with its drawbacks. While you gain a ton of friends and a newfound sense of community, there are certainly aspects of being crammed together with hundreds of other students in a giant building that I'm sure we could all live without. Without further ado, I have decided to highlight the seven most obvious (and annoying) things that suck about living in a college dorm.
1. Doing your laundry is basically an expedition.
Since the laundry room is so far away when you live on the top floor of your building (*sigh*), that means that doing laundry turns into a trip that you have to pack for, since making multiple trips is tiring and unnecessary. Which means that when it's time to do some laundry, you have to also pack up your backpack with your books, some snacks, and homework to pass the time while you wait for your clothes to be finished.
2. There will always be something gross and mysterious in one of the showers.
It's practically inevitable. Which doesn't make it any less gross. Is it hair? A bug? Crusty soap? Sometimes, it's just better not to ask.
3. Honestly, communal bathrooms in general.
In addition to being semi-weird and uncomfortable, it's just a hassle to have to pack up all of your shower stuff and lug it back and forth from your room to the bathroom every time you feel like being clean.
4. Fire drills.
There's nothing more to say about this one -- we've all experienced shuffling outside in the freezing cold during the night because someone burnt their popcorn or it was a regulated drill, which would be fine and dandy if it wasn't so dark and cold.
5. Sometimes your neighbors aren't so neighborly.
Even if you get along with them for the most part, there will be times where it's four in the morning and someone just has to belt out a little Beyonce. (To which I'd normally say you go with your bad self, but not when it's the night before I have to take a huge test.)
6. The pests.
Even the cleanest of buildings will have these issues from time to time -- that's what happens when you live in a spacious (& old!) building. Even if it's to be expected, it's certainly not fun.
7. The lack of space.
Even though I lucked out and live in a pretty spacious dorm, I know that everyone isn't as lucky, and even so, I don't have room for everything. While you do your best to make it work, it's also a little annoying to not have space for everything, and if you do find space, everything starts to feel cluttered and disorderly.
Overall, I definitely think that living on campus is something that everybody should get the chance to experience. These drawbacks and all, it comes with friendships and memories and a sense of community that I wouldn't trade for anything.
Okay, that's a lie. Maybe I could live without the bugs.
