What does a student at Baylor University come in contact with while they are on campus? What do they learn besides business strategies, physics formulas, and anatomy?
1. Texas is hot. Like, heat index of 120 degrees hot during the summer months. In the winter, I wore my heavy coat like twice and I took it off by the end of the day because I was sweating in it.
2. Baylor is really proud of its heritage and traditions. Baylor was established in 1845 before Texas was even a state! That’s really old y’all! The people that founded Baylor wanted Texas to have a Christian institution, so Baylor was born. Even now, Baylor tries it’s hardest to uphold the Christian ideals it was founded on by trying to fix any problems with integrity which are brought to its attention.
3. Baylor loves its students. Now, Baylor does make a lot of money on its students, but I feel really loved on campus because of me as an individual. There are people all over campus who are paid to help the students however they can such as academic, financial, and career advisors as well as counselors in the health and wellness facility in the Student Life Center. Heck, even the dining hall staff or bus drivers who aren’t paid to help students ask about your day and making sure it’s a good one.
4. The Baylor student body is special. To get into Baylor, you can’t be stupid. Every student on campus is smart, but the students at Baylor are also well-rounded, kind, and respectful individuals for the most part that I have met. Even though most students are extremely busy with their jam-packed schedules, I often see them taking the time to help someone if they spill their drink or need someone to watch their stuff in the library while they grab whatever they printed out on a printer or help with a difficult math problem if they can. The community overall is kind and comforting to be a part of.
5. Religion classes are actually interesting. The Baylor professors who teach these courses really know what they are talking about. My Scriptures professor (shout out to Dr. Lynn Tatum) literally lived in Jerusalem and spoke Hebrew and Aramaic. He provided a well-rounded cultural understanding of the practices and stories we learned from the Bible.
6. Baylor has a powerful alumni network. I recently went to Washington D. C. with Baylor and Texas Hunger Initiative, and we had a networking party with the alumni in the D.C. area. Did you know there is a former Congressman from Baylor? There are also influential alumni advising President Obama, running successful businesses, performing in prestigious concert halls, and doing mid-boggling research. Baylor has strong alumni in almost every field, and that provides great resources for current students and new alumni looking for internships and jobs.
7. Baylor is the perfect place to call home. Combining the loving atmosphere, great professors, and alumni to give you stepping stones into the real world, Baylor University is one of the greatest universities in the world. I’m blessed to attend this school, and I hope more people see the same beauty in it that I do.
