Utah has its niches and quirks for sure, aside from the already green jello and funeral potatoes that are stigmatized at every event, Southern Utah has a few quirks of its own

  1. You are related to pretty much everyone you went to high school with.

You heard that correctly. If you weren’t caught up to date the amount of genealogy the state of Utah does, it’s amplified by 10 down in the South. Whether its brothers, sisters, cousins or even a third cousin. You were related to a few people you went to high school with.

2. Swig

For those who aren’t familiar with the term, Swing was a drink joint established in Saint George Utah in 2010, and since then has become the mecca for after football game hangouts or even a lunch drink run. Since it’s opening Swig has established itself up in Northern Utah, and is constantly in a battle with its opponent Fizz. It’s not just a drink it’s a lifestyle here in Southern Utah.

3. Yogurt Joints

Like Swig, any yogurt place can be seen packed at any time of the day. Whether it’s after a church event, or the fact that nothing else is open after 10p.m. Places like Yougurtland and Menchies have become the social gathering place for just about everyone. And if you lucky you probably know two people working.

4. LDS Church building on every corner

While this could be stigmatized as a “Utah” thing in general, Southern Utah really is notorious for having and LDS church building on every corner. In fact, some corners are lucky enough to have two church buildings right next to each other.

5. Running into your teachers or professors at Walmart

A personal favorite of mine, seeing a high school teacher or college professor outside of the classroom and shopping with their family was not an uncommon thing to see on a Saturday. In fact, I could go as far to say that often times discussions of assignments or upcoming projects were exchanged. That’s how small and tight knit the community is, you could see anyone, anywhere at any time.

6. Saint George News or the Spectrum being the main source of News.

While KSL may dominate Northern Utah, Southern Utah could easily rely on Saint George News or the Spectrum as their main news source. Covering places such as Cedar City Utah to Mesquite Nevada.

7. Dixie Rock

Ah such memories, Dixie Rock was notorious for bringing a significant other up for a potential make out session, or where family gathered to watch the sunset. Whatever the occasion was, Dixie Rock was the place to do it. Another place that is a hotspot adjacent to Dixie Rock is Old Airport Hill, where pretty much the same activity applies.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
