7 Things College Students Need For Winter

I think some of us need to be reminded how to handle the crazy weather.

Being a college student in the winter time can really be a challenge sometimes. After it snows, we find ourselves trying not to face plant into the sidewalk as we dodge snow and ice piles. Not to mention sometimes the wind is pushing us back while we attempt to walk to class. Here are some things college students should have during the winter:

1. A Shovel

This may seem like a no brainer, but a lot of people during the most recent snow storm on campus freaked out because they did not have a shovel. You should keep one in your dorm, apartment, etc. just in case you get snowed in, or your car is lost under mounds of snow.

2. An Umbrella

These people have the right idea, using their umbrellas for snow instead of just rain. It will help, trust me. Having that umbrella will protect your face from being hit by wind and snow.

3. Proper Shoes

I see people on campus walking around in sneakers with no traction, high-heeled boots, any type of improper footwear that you can imagine wearing for the winter. Invest in a nice pair of boots, ones with good traction and can get you through the snow.

4. A Winter Jacket

This also seems like something that is a no brainer but believe me, I have seen people wearing tiny little jackets that offer no insulation. You need to have a proper jacket, otherwise, you are not protecting yourself from the cold. And if you can't afford a brand new jacket, try going to thrift stores, Goodwill, or places that have cheaper coats. You will be glad you did.

5. Hats, Gloves and Scarves

You should look like you are going on an expedition to Alaska. You do not want to get frostbite, been there, done that. Make sure to bundle up from head to toe.

6. Cold and Flu Medicine

Winter is cold and flu season, so make sure you are fully stocked with cold and flu medicine. College students are in classes the majority of the time, an environment where germs are spread easily. Use a lot of hand sanitizer too.

7. A Warm Beverage

A warm beverage might seem silly, but it doubles as a hand warmer when you are walking to class, and warms you up when you drink it. Whether it is hot coffee, hot cocoa, or tea, it will do the job.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
