You graduate high school and you can't wait to get to college: no parents telling you what to do (kinda), you seem to have all the freedom in the world, and you basically have a sleepover every night. Sure, college is great and all, but sometimes you need a vacation from your vacation and school isn't even the worst part.
When you leave home, you also leave all the things you didn't even know you would miss. Thanksgiving and Christmas come around and you can't believe you sacrificed these things for freedom.
1. Home-Cooked Meals
Being away for so long, you forget what real food tastes like. Processed meals become an everyday routine and an actual meal cooked by your mom is something you can only dream about. Do I even have to mention Thanksgiving dinner?
2. A Bed That Isn't A Twin XL
Before freshmen year, you don't think the dorm life will be all that bad. But then you get there and it's just you and your twin XL bed and five feet of walking space. As you lay in bed you just picture what your room at home is doing right now.
3. High School
Senioritis is a very real disease, I'm guilty of it myself. But the things I would do to go back to senior year classes. You think high school prepares you for college, but your last year there does the exact opposite. There are several occasions where dropping out becomes a real consideration.
4. Your Car
If you didn't take your car to college like me, then you understand the struggle. You swear you won't need it, which you don't most of the time, but you find yourself getting very jealous of people who have them.
5. Having Your Mom Handle Everything
Little things like going to the doctor or doing laundry become the biggest obstacles in your life. You don't realize how much you take your mom for granted until you're hauling your laundry basket downstairs and actually paying to wash your clothes.
6. Your High School Friends
Sure, making new friends and starting over is never a bad thing, but seeing familiar faces seem to turn your mood around. Going home and hanging out with everyone you did in high school is refreshing and reminds you that you're not going through the struggles of college alone.
7. Free Education
No one understands that going to high school is a privilege; you'll never get to go to school for free again. Oh and the textbooks — getting one for $100 seems free. It's easy to forget that when you feel like skipping class it costs about $85 every time you do.
You never really realize everything you took granted growing up until you suddenly have to do everything by yourself. If this is a part of becoming an adult, I want to stay a kid for as long as possible.
