7 Things You Must Know Before Reading Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

On July 31st, 2016 JK Rowling released the latest installment of one of the most successful franchises our generation will see. This series has brought a whole new kind of reality to life, adding magical creatures and characters of which will be immortalized in the pages she has written. From the age of 11 I was mesmerized by the magic Rowling created, wanting to be as studious as Hermonie, witty as Ron, and brave like Harry. For those who have never read a Harry Potter book or watched one of the eight movies, here are the magical seven things you need to know before you start reading Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Part one and two.

Book One

1. Harry Potter is also known as the “Boy Who Lived” because his mother’s unyielding love for him stopped him from being killed by Lord Voldemort (the darkest wizard of their time). After his parents death Harry was raised by muggles (non-magic folk) who insisted on keeping the magical world away from him until Hagrid (a friend of his diseased parents) comes in on their vacation and saves the day… Happy 11th Birthday Harry!

2. Lord Voldemort splits his soul into seven horcruxes (seven hidden objects) in order to ensure that he would never be able to die… think again Voldy.

3. Harry meets Ron Wesley, and Hermonie Granger in his 1st day of school and they become best friends and stick through the thickest of things to the very end. During this first year Lord Voldemort takes over the body of Professor Quirrell (a professor at Hogwarts) and tries to take the Sorcerer’s Stone (which would make him live forever) but Harry stops him and saves the day.

Book Two

Lord Voldemort comes back during their second year as Tom Riddle and brainwashes Ginny Wesley (Ron’s little sister) into opening the Chamber of secrets, BUT Harry stops and kills Tom Riddle… but not dear old Voldemort.

Book Three, Four, and Five

In the third book Harry finds out he has a living godfather, Sirius Black, who just so happens to be a fugitive.

The fourth book consists of the Triwizard Cup in which Cedric Digory dies because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The fifth book consists of the start of Dumbledore’s Army, a militant group of students headed by Harry to stop Voldemort. Sirius Black dies trying to save Harry and Voldemort returns to the public eye showing that Harry isn’t insane.

Book Six

Dumbledore tells Harry about the 7 horcruxes and that he needs to find them all and destroy them, and then Snape kills him on top of the astronomy tower.

Book Seven

Harry, Hermonie and Ron set out to find the horcruxes. The Ministry of Magic falls into Voldemort’s power and all chaos ensues. But don’t worry Harry plays dead, catches Voldemort buy surprise and kills him.

And that's what you missed during the last seven books.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
