8 Things All New Sorority Members Need To Know
Ashley Brickman

To begin with, if you are reading this and you are a new member then congratulations! Going Greek is one of the best decisions ever, and you will only blossom from here on out. Being in a sorority is not all about t-shirts & date parties, it is much more than that. Being in a sorority is about life long friendships, rituals, involvement, having someone to cry to, sisters to pomp with, having friends to go to football games with, and (possibly most importantly) someone to go get Chick-fil-a with. I am a sophomore within my chapter and I am absolutely in love with my house and the values that we believe in. I have enjoyed my time here in just one short year, but I'm already sad that I only have two more years left.

For all new members in a sorority I have put together a small list of things you need to remember while transitioning into your freshman year.

1. You are our future.

We worked so hard to get you here because we saw potential in you. As an older member we now expect you to keep our tradition going, and we trust you to keep a positive outlook on our chapter as a whole.

2. You don’t have to party to have fun.

Most new members believe that they have to party to have fun or to make friends. That is not the case!! You are in a house with 200 of your new sisters so there will be girls who do party, but there is also girls who don’t care for partying and they would rather snuggle up and watch a movie on a Friday night. Do not give up who you are just because you want to “fit in” because I promise that you will find your group of friends.

3. Sororities are NOT like the movies.

Sororities are portrayed very differently in movies. First of all, In Legally Blonde the entire chapter is waiting for her as Elle walks downstairs to meet her precious Warner. Other movies such as Neighbors, The House Bunny, and many more are just completely wrong. Sororities are stereotypes, but what most people don't know is just how wrong that stereotype is. Sororities are not all about Lilly Pulitzer, make up, drinking, house parties, or hazing. None of that is true, and I hope that you now realize that since you are in a chapter. At Oklahoma State, a typical 'sorority' girl's outfit is an oversized t-shirt, and shirts with a bun on top of her head and no makeup.

4. You do not pay for your friends.

I know that people always say "but don't

you pay for your friends?", no i do not. Of course I have to pay to be a member of my sorority but our dues are for important stuff that is actually meaningful for my chapter. It literally makes me laugh when people think that I pay for these girls to be my friends. I have made true friendships within my sorority and I know that they will always be a part of my life.

5. Get involved.

The best way to fall head over heels in love with your chapter is by getting involved. Whether its by joining intramurals with your house, holding an auxiliary or executive position, or even doing service hours with your sisters. I truly believe that getting involved is the greatest way that your chapter will benefit you in return.

6. LIVE IN HOUSE.

Living in house is seriously the best experience ever! I grew up with only one brother and I never had to deal with sharing a room with someone else so I was a little uneasy about moving in at first. But, whenever move in sign ups came around my best friend from high school and I decided to live together in house and it has been the best experience ever by far. I have grown so close with all of my sisters and my love for each one of them, and my chapter, has grown immensely. It is so much fun getting to live with my sisters. Honestly, will you ever get the chance again to live with 70 of your sisters?

7. Pomping is fun.

Pomping may sound exhausting and time consuming but I promise it is not that bad. Pomping is a great way to get to know people within the fraternity that you are paired with, and also your sisters. Homecoming is Oklahoma States best time of the year and we need to take advantage of that and show everyone what we can do. All night pomp is one of my favorite and most memorable nights from my freshman year because everyone is dancing, singing, and having so much fun while pomping together.

8. Sisters are forever.

You may not see it now but these are your sisters and they will be by your side until the very end. Someday whenever you need someone I guarantee one of your sisters will be there to help you. These friendships that you make during the next four years of your college experience are the friendships that you will keep forever. You & your sisters are going to grow together throughout the years, and that is one of the most important things in a sisterhood. Sisterhood is a bond that cannot be broken. Love & respect your sisters, because they are your sisters until the very end.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
