Being single: it's the greatest and the worst, all at the same time. Sure, you have the freedom to do whatever you want, go anywhere with your friends, date whoever you want, etc. But when you're the only single roommate? Life gets a little more complicated... and awkward. And makes being single seem not as great as you thought.
1. Movie nights are... awkward.
Everyone is cuddling and holding hands in the dark and I'm sitting alone on the other side of the couch stuffing my face and saying, "Man, this popcorn is delicious!"
2. Sweet gestures make you a weird mixture of incredibly happy for your roomies and incredibly jealous.
My roommates have the cutest boyfriends that love them and do sweet things for them all the time. Don't get me wrong -- they're all amazing and absolutely deserve all that special treatment and more on a daily basis, but come on! Single people deserve foliage and carbs now and then too!
3. Can't hang out in the living room. Roommate and boyfriend are whispering on the couch.
Don't worry about me -- I'll be in my room looking for shapes on the ceiling.
4. Being invited out with the group = being the perpetual third, fifth, or seventh wheel.
Dinner out with everyone? Sounds like I'll get some scintillating conversation in with my burger.
5. Knocking on my own front door before I come in.
I'd really rather not walk in on my roommates mid-makeout. So I take precautions. Putting my keys in the door, kicking the closet door, stomping in the hallway, knocking, etc. They get to separate, my eyesight is spared, everyone's happy!
6. "Wanna hang out tonight?" "Can't. The boyfriend is coming over."
Whatever happened to sisters before misters?! You were mine first!
7. Eating cookie dough in bed with Netflix? Sounds better than a relationship to me!
Food is life. Being single is still a party. And maybe one day, I'll see my lovely, committed roommates again.
