7 Strange Things People Have Worn On UGA's Campus

Because who doesn't want to walk around Athens in a banana costume?

College is a strange, strange time.

Ask any college student and they’ll probably tell you that they, in fact, have no idea what they’re doing. Just in general.

And sometimes that comes out in the form of weird outfits that people actually wear on campus and even to class. I’m not just talking about pajamas or athletic clothes: I’m talking about costumes, out-of-the-ordinary-clothing, and everything in between.

I know there’s usually a reason that people do this, and I don’t pretend to know what they are. So let’s have some fun and take these out of context. Enjoy!

1. A completely normal outfit completed with hamburger slippers

Yeah, you heard me right. Just the typical, college-kid athletic clothes with hamburger slippers instead of shoes. I'm being 100% serious when I say that I admire this person so much; they are my hero. It takes a lot to pull off hamburger slippers with any outfit, but they managed to do it. And I’m jealous, honestly.

2. A banana costume

Yes, like the ones they sell at Halloween stores. Just picture a banana waiting for a crosswalk and checking their phone casually. I've actually seen this situation happen more than once at my time at UGA, believe it or not.

3. A "Where's Waldo" outfit

OK, so this actually isn’t that strange on UGA’s campus. When a group of pledges for a certain fraternity rush, they have to dress up like (or at least wear a similar shirt too) Where’s Waldo on Wednesdays. It became a regular sight. Which is strange to hear, I’m sure.

4. A shark onesie

Because who says you can't celebrate shark week year round? I'm honestly considering getting one of these for myself because 1) I love sharks and 2) I would literally just walk around singing the "Jaws" theme song.

5. Tarzan

At one point a few years ago, Tarzan appeared on campus to promote the on-campus Tarzan musical that was premiering. I am including the yelling and climbing trees as part of his outfit because I can.

6. A Gumby costume

You might think that this would be fun to see, but I’m actually sorta freaked out by Gumby. Again, imagine the crosswalk situation, but Gumby is standing there. Menacingly. Not so fun now, is it? I'm not a fan of this, obviously-- just look at him.

7. A gingerbread man costume

I feel like even on a college campus, this wouldn’t be a typical costume you’d see. Bravo, gingerbread man, for adding some originality to the game. Also, rest assured that if I ever saw this person and worked up the courage to talk to them, I'd ask if they knew the muffin man.

I definitely missed some, but with a campus as big as the University of Georgia I’m very likely to. What are some of the weirdest, most wonderful things you’ve seen people wear at your college? Let me know!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
