It is that time of the year again, Valentine's Day. Oh, look how much love is in the air, from couples running around Walmart with those giant teddy bears and looking at different discounted cologne in the clearance section that smells somewhat decent under a fifteen dollar budget. Okay, I may sound like a prude, but I promise I am not. I am single again on my 19th Valentine's Day on this earth and I am perfectly fine with it. I would like to thank my parents for not overbearing me with questions and when I didn't get any Valentine's gifts from boys they always gave me a little gift. (Thanks, Mom and Dad!)
I got lucky this year and the majority of my friends are single, which is a score for me! One of my newly single friends asked, "What is it like being single on Valentine's Day?" I told her, it's pretty relaxing and fun with borderline crying involved. Because I usually find myself watching endless Hallmark movies about love and desire including "27 Dresses." That movie gives me hope.
However this year, I am embarking my last Valentine's Day being a "teenager" with a new aura around me. I want to spend it with my best friends, watch movies, and possibly some other fun shenanigans. I hope what I give you helps my fellow single ladies out a little this Valentine's Day, well I mean "Sunday fun day."
Step one: Go to Walmart/ Wegmans (or any other food store)
I want you to buy chocolate; get some Dark, white, strawberry, whatever fancies your palette. Put it in your cart and head over to the frozen food section, grab your favorite frozen TV dinners (I prefer the smart ones, it's part of my diet), then head over to the chips section, buy some popcorn, Chex Mix, and whatever you would enjoy! Screw your diet for this one day it's okay, just eat in good portions.
Step two: Buy or rent movies (Rom Coms, horror, and classic movies)
You and your group of friends should rent or buy any movie that you can cry, laugh, and throw popcorn at the TV with. Depending on how many of you are hanging out, each friend has a choice of two movies. This year I am choosing "Pillow Talk" starring Doris Day and Rock Hudson, it's my favorite Rom Com and it always brings a smile on my face.
Also I am choosing "Bride Wars" starring Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson, because it reminds me too much of my future minus the fighting in the wedding dresses (spoiler) because my best friend since I was born reminds me of this, and I want her to be my maid of honor one day (hopefully if I can find someone).
Step three: Let your feelings come out!
(Cry, laugh, throw the chocolate you just bought at the TV.)
Yes, Elle Woods in "Legally Blonde" had it right all along. Yelling and throwing chocolate at the TV is therapeutic, just don't throw it too hard because you do not want to break the TV. You and girls just reminded each other about funny stories about your love life, comparing yourself to the movies you are watching, and just listen to each other.
And if you have been single your entire life (put your hands up) listen to your friends who have been in relationships and feel awkward maybe this year about not having a male counterpart with them on this holiday. Make them feel welcome to the single girls club, they might be distraught but deal with it, when your time comes and you get heartbroken I guarantee they will be there.
Step four: Pamper yourselves (nails, hair, makeup and face masks).
Grab the nail polish, some face masks you got this past holiday, hand lotion and some hair products. Before the movie marathon starts, get yourself some ready, and relaxed. Valentine's day is on a Sunday this year which is a day of rest, so rest!
Do each other's nails, put on a face mask, and fix your hair or just leave it in a messy bun just to show your beautiful face, everyone is beautiful 24/7 do not get yourself all fancy. Make this your day.
Step five: Grab some Cosmo magazines, seventeen, and your Pinterest board of hot guys.
I know you have one, do not hide it!
Print out, cut out all the hot guys you have, some glue and plain paper. Make a man dream board. Enjoy every piece of hotness and create your dream men on one piece of paper. Keep that paper for next Valentine's Day and see hey if your still single keep on adding to that paper if not hide that paper from your boyfriend. It can be your little secret.
Step six: Make a proud single playlist, 'blast' it before you binge watch your movies.
Music is definitely essential for you and girls to jam out too! Get that Beyonce, One Direction (I know you like them), Drake, and any pump up music to get you guys in the mood! But please do not play Adele, you will regret it 40 seconds later when you are crying. She is really good but she will bring you to tears.
Step seven: Have fun with your Girls! Go Crazy!
Get wild, get loud and get pumped! Make this holiday into your own! That is the best part about Valentine's Day, it is not set in stone on what you can do! Make it a best friend's hangout but 10 times better and a holiday where you and your girls can say, "Yeah we have a friendship holiday." And remember if one of your best friends is newly single, welcome her into your world with open arms! "
