There's a lot of giveaways that you're an unpaid intern, like first off, you don't get the glorious feeling of a paycheck after a forty hour week. I'm not saying that there aren't benefits of an unpaid internship: experience, resume, those sort of things, but no one can deny that your internship would certainly feel a little more rewarding if it bought you a taco here and there.
Here are seven signs that you're an unpaid intern:
1. Even though you just worked a nine hour day, you have to go work at a restaurant for another six because rent isn't free. Nothing is more of a bummer than coming home and slipping off those high heels for a moment to just relax only to realize that you're already running five minutes late for your shift. Your feet will never forgive you.
2. You will wait 20 minutes for the lady with the parking validation to return. Sure, it's wasted time and can be quite annoying when you're in a hurry but I'll be damned if I'm paying to work somewhere for free. No way, no how. I earned that free parking and that's just what I'm going to get!
3. You feel zero signs of guilt for eating any and all the free food ever offered. Maybe that's just me, but you bet your butt that if I run out of coffee at my apartment that I'm finding the biggest coffee mug in the cupboard to get the largest, steaming cup the second I get to work. It sure doesn't hurt when there's complimentary bagels to pair.
4. You pray for the day that your networking skills finally pay off. Measly intern today, CEO tomorrow? It's certainly possible. Please Lord let these business cards excel my future and bank account.
5. You know every single person in the office doing the internship purely for a resume builder. Not saying it's a bad thing to do, any internship does look great on paper but if you don't put in any effort, chances are that your boss won't feel extremely inclined to recommend you. You don't get some unless you give some, that's all there is to it.
6. You judge how little your friend's make for their internship and then remember that you make none. Guilty as charged. I've certainly wondered why people would take an internship that pays only minimum wage just to let the overwhelming realization come over me that I make absolutely nothing in return for my work. Go me.
7. You love your job but always know that it could be better. I absolutely adore everyone at my internship and the work that I do never feels like work because I genuinely enjoy it. However, at the end of the day I know that it's missing just the tiniest cherry to top off the cake because it's unpaid.
Disclaimer: I love my internship and feel blessed every day for the opportunity given to me to be able to do what I'm doing. Sure, I wish I was paid but who wouldn't?
