There are things we lack while we are away at college; food at our disposal, perfect hygiene and, most importantly, dogs. Honestly, tell me that every time you see a dog on campus walking across your Quad you don't perk up, or smile. Everyone needs a little puppy-lovin' in their lives, especially in their early 20s. Many studies say that dogs are huge stress relievers and who needs stress relief almost every day? Yes, you guessed right. Students in their early 20s that are constantly stressed and overwhelmed with school. I could probably list a million reasons why I love being a dog parent in my early 20s, but here are just a few to give you an idea of how awesome it really is.
1. Someone to meet you at the door when you come home.
Imagine walking in the front door after a long day of classes, practice, or whatever it is that you do all day and being greeted by a wagging tail. There's nothing sweeter than that. Not only do they greet you at the door, but they act like you have been gone for eight years. A friend once told me, "you could lock your partner in the trunk of a car and a dog and when you let them out the dog will always be happier to see you than your partner will be."
2. Long walks
No one loves long walks more than a dog. Personally, my dog would walk all day if I allowed her to. It's a good way to take a break from a busy, stressful, day and you can spend it with someone that is excited to be with you.
3. Someone to talk to
They might not talk back (if yours does, please let me know) but it is nice to just talk to them. Sometimes even venting to them is nice. They're the best listeners.
4. They can understand when you're upset.
Most dogs can sense when you are having a bad day and it is awesome to have someone that will just quietly lay their head on your lap when you're moping or even crying.
5. Netflix buddy
Someone to watch Netflix with and to cuddle with? They won't talk, or interrupt your show? It does not get better than that.
6. They are always happy
Self explanatory.
7. Unconditional love
Dogs will always love you at your best and at your worst. Quite frankly, in your early 20s you will experience a whole rollercoaster of being at your best and your worst and not every one will accept that, but a dog always will. At that age it is important to have that kind of companion around to give you unconditional love when you're feeling like you have reached your lowest point. Becoming a dog parent can give you that companion.
