I know we have all been asked that dreaded question of, “What are you going to school for?” Or perhaps, “What is your major?” When I am faced with that question, I smile and am ever so happy to reply, “Elementary Education.” I won’t lie, not everyone is as excited about that answer as I am. I have had people make comments such as, “Good luck” or “Wow, don’t you know that the pay isn’t good at all?” I don’t know why, but the field of education is looked down upon. On one side of things, those comments make me doubt my career choice, but on the other side it gives me confidence in the path I’ve chosen. My favorite question from people would have to be, “So why do you want to be a teacher?” I am going to give you my reasons below.
1.Children are a blessing
I cannot express how much I adore and love children. Honestly, working with children sounds a lot better than working with adults. Children are humble and eager to learn new things. They have the biggest, most caring hearts I have ever seen, and they are not afraid to speak their mind or tell how they are feeling.
2.The impact I will have on my future students
Every day that I will walk into my classroom, I know that I will be shaping and molding the lives, even if it’s something small. I will be teaching them to think outside of the box to help them grow into independent thinkers. I will be making a difference in the world on a daily basis. How many other positions have that opportunity?
3.Children are the future
I will be affecting the futures of each child that I will teach over the years when I get my degree. I will get to inspire and encourage them to have dreams and set goals, and to always work hard to achieve them. I could very well be the only person in their lives that has faith in them that they could do anything they set their minds to.
4.Those “light-bulb” moments
When I aided for a first grade teacher my senior year of high school, I got to witness students when they finally “got” something. Their eyes light up and they are so excited that they finally understand something that didn’t quite make sense at first.
5.My own space
I would much rather have a classroom decorated by me than an office space that I would most likely have to share with another adult. I will get to pick out a theme and make it as cute and friendly as I want! My classroom will be a safe haven for children. A place they can feel comfortable in, while learning various subjects.
6.Never a dull moment
Most of you know that children of all ages are plain silly sometimes, if not most times. I know without a doubt that I will leave work every day with a story to tell people about. They will help me to understand that everything doesn’t have to always be strict and quiet, rather we can all have fun and be a little loud if we want.
7.Time for my future family
Being a teacher will allow me to have a job and to spend time with my future husband and children. I am going to value family time with my future family, and I know it would be very hard to do that with most other popular professions. I will have the summers off to travel and share God’s Word, teaching children all around the world, all while spending time with my family. I will also get off at a reasonable hour and spend the evening with them, as well as being able to tuck my children in at night. That is enough of a reason to choose education in itself.
I know that being a teacher can be difficult sometimes. Every day will not always be a “good day,” but as long as I am making a difference in their lives and showing them God’s love, it will be worth it. My students will be like my own children, and I can’t wait to teach them.
