Finally, the semester is over. You could not WAIT to go home, sleep in, get good food, and get to see your dog! You need a break from school, and you don’t even realize that being home from the summer is sometimes not all its cracked up to be. With all the good things, comes the not so good things, and here is why,…
1. Your Friends From Home Are Distant
Not always, but we all have those people we were very close with before college, and now its just not the same. We will always have those one or two few who we stay in touch with, but they are not nearly as close as your friends from college.
2. Work, Work, Work, Work, Work
No, I am not referencing the Rhianna song. Summer means free time and free time means work. You think you don’t have money now? Wait until you go to college where you actually have $4.02 in your bank account and you are probably going to spend it on chips and guac from chipotle. You need to have a hefty amount of money saved up to survive the fall and spring semesters when you go back to school, so get working.
3. Internships
Ah, more work. But guess what? You are working for free! Yes we all know, internships look good on a resume, but its difficult to convince yourself that you aren’t just wasting time. Picking an internship is key! If you don’t enjoy what you are about to do, don’t do it! This will make it more rewarding based on the fact you are working for no pay, at least enjoy it!
4. Parents
My parents give me the opportunity to go to college and get an education, and I love them to death! However, after months of nobody telling you to empty the dishwasher, asking if you cleaned your room or texting you asking when you will be home, it is hard to adjust when all these questions start flooding your way. You get used to it though and love them nonetheless.
5. Who? What? When?
While you were at school, you probably missed things that happened at home. All of a sudden he is dating her and uncle Bob doesn't come to family dinner anymore because of some argument with the grandparents and whatever else. When you ask your family just says, “don’t worry about it”. You probably won’t talk to uncle Bob for awhile, and guess what, you will probably never know why.
6. You. Can’t. Stop. Eating.
At school you found yourself getting plate after plate at the dining hall trying to load up because you wouldn’t be able to eat for another 6 hours. Well guess what, now you have an abundance of food at any time! This is great, but this is also scary. I found myself opening a family sized bag of Cape Cod chips last night thinking “oh I will just have a few” and next thing I know I finished the bag and have a cup of black raspberry ice-cream in my hand. Watch out because it might catch up to you.
7. You miss your friends from school
You find yourself sending them funny tweets and videos on Facebook. It's hard to not talk to them at least once a day, and its extremely difficult when you need to show them someone’s snap story that they aren’t friends with, describing it with words just isn't the same.
