I am currently a student who is pursuing a degree is Psychology with a focus on pre-med and a minor (possible double major) in French.
"Why French? It's a waste of your time. Spanish is what you should learn."
If I had a dollar for every time someone told me learning French was a waste of my time and money, I would be able to pay for my private university with almost no debt.
And no, it's not a waste of my time or money for some very simple reasons.
1. It's relevant.
French is the second most widely learned foreign language (English being the first), and the sixth most widely spoken language in the world.
2. Jobs.
If I decide to become a doctor without boarders... look at that. I speak a widely known language. France is the world's fifth biggest economy and third-ranking destination for foreign investment. France is key to success, economically.
3. The French culture is used every day in English speaking countries.
Whether it be the food, music, or arts. So, when your child decides to take ballet – they're learning french along with it.
4. Traveling.
When you decide to go to France, Canada, or any of the other 30+ countries that speak French, I'll be the only one who understands people. How will you order your food?
5. My knowledge of French helps me understand more languages.
I now know many phrases and words in Spanish due to my French background.
6. French is used for many international affairs.
French is the official language of the United Nations, the European Union, UNESCO, NATO, the International Red Cross, the Olympics, and international courts.
7. It's a beautiful language.
How beautiful does, "parce que, je t'aime." sound? French is one of the most beautiful and flowing language.
So please. Try to argue with me that I'm wasting my time learning this amazing language. Je m'en moque.
