The phrase “summer school” is an oxymoron. Those two words just don’t go together. However, for some of us, those two words have to go together. But it’s not as bad as some of you may think. Yes, it has its downfalls, but that, my friends, is a common trait with pretty much anything here on this earth. There are some positives about summer school that should be pointed out too. Here are seven reasons why summer school is the best and worst:
1. If you’re not a fan of crowds, campus is nice and empty.
There are a lot fewer people and it can be pretty relaxing. There’s more room at the gym, the basketball court, the library, the bookstore, dining areas, etc. You get the idea.
2. You have less time for many things, like family, work, and vacation.
Missing one class is often detrimental; prioritizing can be pretty difficult some times.
3. Once fall rolls around, you no longer have to worry about those silly core classes like science or composition credits.
If you do them in summer, that’s one less thing to worry about in the fall!
4. Often, any sorts of food or coffee shops on campus close way too early.
Let’s be real, three hour classes without coffee is just asking a bit too much. By the end of my class this summer, I got really good at packing snacks and using the vending machine.
5. Since your professor(s) have fewer classes in the summer, they most likely have more time to connect with you.
This can be very helpful for doing well in the class and you might just find that your professor is a boss.
6. If you have to walk to class, you may as well wear your gym clothes to class.
That summer heat, especially here in Texas, is relentless.
7. Classes practically pass by in the blink of an eye.
If you’ve never taken a summer class, you’ll be amazed at how quickly they do. I definitely was!
As you can tell, there are a lot of ups and downs to that silly phrase, “summer school.” If you have to take classes this summer, hopefully this will help you see some of the positive in it. If you can, just make the best of it! It’ll be more enjoyable that way.
