Just one year after the "#OscarsSoWhite" controversy, the Academy has caused another stir in the mainstream media for different reasons. This year's standouts like "Moonlight" and "Arrival" each earned eight total nominations. Others like "Lion," "Manchester by the Sea," and "Hacksaw Ridge" each earned an impressive six nominations. Leading the pack, with a generous 14 nominations was this year's musical sensation "La La Land" starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. The film tied with "Titanic" and "All About Eve" for the most nominations in history. Here's why it deserves the recognition.
1. The Costumes
The entire movie is filled with costume magic. Mary Zophres, who designed the costumes, did a spectacular job. The color coordination with the sets is absolutely fantastic and each outfit is unique in every way. Who doesn't want Emma Stone's entire wardrobe in this movie? There is so much range. It is unreal.
2. The Music
A completely original soundtrack that is as good as this one? Unreal. It invokes a plethora of emotions, and each song is catchier than the one before it. Plus, Ryan Gosling actually learned jazz piano for it. Could it get any better?
3. The Plot
Without giving too much away, this movie has one of the most amazing and heartbreaking plot lines ever. It makes you feel extreme happiness, but also like you could lay in bed and sob for a while. I am all for any movie that includes Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. "Crazy, Stupid, Love" anyone?
4. The Color
The movie is shot in CinemaScope, which is a series of lens specific for shooting widescreen movies. The scenery is amazing. The sets are amazing. Everything is amazing. The neon colors add to the brightness of the costumes, and surely do not disappoint.
5. The Musical Numbers
Let's all be honest, "Another Day In The Sun" will go down as one of the most classic music numbers in film history. People dancing in cars on the highway? If it were real, everyone would be crabby, but the movie worked its magic and made it interesting.
6. The Dance Numbers
If you saw this movie and didn't all of the sudden want to dance through the air in a planetarium, then you are wrong. Every dance number in the movie was perfectly executed and made the entire movie.
7. The Originality
At the end of the day, "La La Land" was incredibly original, and the story was great. It will go down as a classic film. It was a true musical masterpiece and deserves every award it was nominated for. I am 100 percent for any movie that Emma Stone sings in. Or any movie Emma Stone is in at all.
