Growing up it was hard to find a television show that perfectly described the ups and downs of growing up in a Hispanic household. It was not until recently that a new sitcom featuring actress Gina Rodriguez called "Jane The Virgin" perfectly and humorously shared the experiences I had growing up Latina.
1. Our "Abuela" always knows best
I am not sure why but whenever there was a problem everyone would call Abuela and she would have the perfect solution. Whether it dealt with relationships, love, being sick, or what recipe to cook for dinner, Abuela always was one step ahead of everyone else. No matter how annoying her advice might be at times you know you would of not be able to live without it.
2. Long names are something to be proud of
In many
3. Dancing is in your blood
Family parties all included dancing no matter the occasion. While that might scare some, you have been taught to shake your hips from as long as you can remember. Salsa, merengue, or bachata, when a song came on you knew you had it under control thanks to your mom.
4. We all have our "Rogelio"
Having an overprotective father was both a good and bad thing. Just like Jane has her dad Rogelio we had our dad acting as our protector. As you grew older you appreciated it more and realized he was just trying to watch out for you. Whether it was dating, going out with friends, or even a dress you wanted to wear for homecoming, dad's approval meant everything.
5. You blame telenovelas for your love life expectations
Yes, the overdramatic and funny soap operas made you think you were going to find the love of your life and some outlandish drama would occur right after leaving you unhappy. But then you realized it was all just for ratings and you would be able to live happily ever after with no telenovela drama following you around.
6. Your mom is your best friend
7. Family means everything
Having a close knit family means everything, no matter what bumps occur along the way. They are the first people you tell
No matter the situation Jane is always found smiling and optimistic. While her family endured many different obstacles which forced Jane to grow up faster than most kids her age, instead of holding resentment it has made her into a better person. With the overdramatic laughable moments mixed in with the serious moments, Jane The Virgin offers Latina girls everywhere a good laugh and reminsce of some childhood moments
