As winter break is coming to an end, spring rush and recruitment is right around the corner for campuses across the nation. Have you ever wondered about the girls you see on campus proudly wearing letters across their chest? I can tell you that I definitely did before I joined Greek life. I looked up to those women as role models in the community before I became one of them.
There's a lot of negative speculation about going Greek, but I can guarantee you that most of that slander is either from someone who isn't involved in a Greek life or someone who is but doesn't understand the true meaning of it. Take it from someone who's actively involved and genuinely enjoys every moment of it. Since joining my sorority, I have been immersed in a completely new world with endless opportunities and support. If you're wavering back and forth about whether or not you want to go through recruitment, here are a few reasons why I would definitely encourage you to:
You grow as a person.
You will learn things about yourself you never knew. You and all of your sisters will push each other to reach your fullest potential. You will find that you are stronger than you think and that you are capable of more than what you could imagine. You also get a better sense of the type of woman you want to become. The ideals and morals your sorority values help to mold you into a better person.
You gain valuable experience and professional skills.
You learn how to communicate effectively and professionally as a liaison between the national officers, leaders in the community and your chapter. You develop crisis and change management skills as various problems arise, which is a much appreciated skill that more and more companies are looking for in candidates. You also learn how to become superwoman by perfecting your time management and managerial skills.
There are endless leadership and networking opportunities.
There is a leadership position for everyone, and there's multiple opportunities for sisters to run for positions. This isn't like a sports team where your only potential leadership position is to be captain of your last season. In a sorority, there's your executive board and assistants. You can get involved right from the start with an assistant position to give you a little responsibility. It will also provide some insight on the executive board positions so that when you want to run for a position, you'll have a better idea of what their position entails and how to handle certain situations.
Alumnae are actively involved so you'll have networking opportunities up the wazoo. For example, I know that my sorority has a group on LinkedIn to connect active sisters across the nation and share professional opportunities with sisters we've never physically met. They are great resources for any questions you might have about careers or adult life after you graduate. Without one of my alumnae, the JWU branch of Odyssey wouldn't even be in existence seeing as she's the one who presented this opportunity to my chapter.
It's a great way to get involved.
If you were heavily involved in extracurricular activities in high school, then joining Greek life is definitely for you. There's constant events going on, whether it's for your own sorority or for another sorority/fraternity/social fellowship. There's academic workshops, social events, community service, philanthropy events -- you name it! It's a community of hundreds of people where you will find yourself constantly making friends in other organizations and supporting them.
You learn first hand about how a business is run.
People may not realize it, but a sorority is really a business. There's so much more to it than just the Instagram posts you may see about their socials.
You pay membership dues, just as any professional association would require.
You are held to a higher standard of conduct. When you join Greek life, you are automatically put under a microscope by your peers, professors, other leaders in your educational institution and your organization's national office. Therefore, you are on your best behavior at all times.
There are member expectations that must be met,or else you will not be on good standing within your organization. Just like any other business you might work for, if you don't meet their expectations on multiple occasions, you are likely to be let go from the company.
You find your home away from home.
Whether your college or university is a five minute drive or a five hour plane ride away from home, you are separated from your family and the friends you grew up with. I don't know about you, but when I first came to college, it was hard to adjust to a completely new surrounding without my parents and best friends from home. It wasn't until I found my sisters that I found my home away from home. I love coming home to my sisters after a long day of work and class. There are times when we bicker as a real family would, but our bond and love is stronger than any other.
You find your bridesmaids and your forever friends.
You will find your close knit group of friends that you just know will become your future bridesmaids. You can count on them for literally anything and everything, and they know that you will always be there for them as well. You'll have conversations about the weirdest things and share your most embarrassing moments with them. They will grow to be the best support system you could ever ask for. These friendships you create and nurture will go beyond just the four years of college -- they are for life.
Again, I strongly encourage you to go Greek if you haven't made a decision about going through recruitment yet. This is the best decision I've ever made, and I don't regret a single moment of my involvement in the Greek community as an active sister.
